I wonder if they just made him a huge offer to get him to jump ship, or if Ford and he agreed to part ways.

Read between the lines... it would be highly unlikely that Nissan could recruit him that quickly if he and Ford had "agreed to part ways." It's much more likely that he left on his own accord for this offer, and Ford, once realizing he was going to a competitor, obligingly walked him to the door.

It's not like they could do anything to stop him anyway. It's not like he was under contract with a non-compete clause. Everyone who works for ford and isn't Union is an at-will employee.

Most executives do have contracts and non compete clauses.

Yeah, and a non-compete can’t unreasonably keep someone from working, so if you are a car designer they can’t say you can’t design cars for anyone, which may be how he ended up with Nissan. His non-compete may only include GM and FCA for instance.

Obviously not or there would be legal issues in this case.

As Sullynd points out it may only apply to certain mfrs or they gave the ok.

the reason they can enforce a non compete clause is they usually give them more than enough severance to cover their salary during that period.  So it’s not that bad.
