AGR
Link Considering that Toyota has by far the largest war chest of any automaker, this will send chills down the backs of most of its competitors. Edited June 8, 2019 by AGR
mackinaw
Toyota is trailing well behind most manufacturers when it comes to BEV's. They're far ahead on fuel cell EV's, but lagging on the battery front. Big war chest or not, they're a long way from catching VW or GM.

Actually Toyota is promoting collaboration with other automakers and suppliers. On page 9 of Terashi San's presentation, he says "Toyota will take a cooperative stance and work together with many parties to promote initiatives for the construction of new business models." 1559900303AimingtoPopulariseBEVs.pdf

Yes sir, they are behind for sure. A Toyota executive in North America (Bob Carter) and one in Europe (Gerald Killmann) both made excuses for Toyota's lack of BEVs. That brought a lot of media and investor criticism of Toyota recently. Looks like Terashi San at least realizes that BEV isn't a "fad" or "trend", it's a cornerstone of the whole automotive industry's future. And Terashi San makes a lot of good points in his presentation, beyond the tacit admission that Toyota is behind the competition with BEV. He recognizes not only that electrification and BEV in particular will transform the automotive industry and bring many benefits to society. But also that a business model based just on each car company including Toyota manufacturing its own BEVs and having customers buy them is not enough. As a certified Toyota hater, I hoped that they would have stayed that way.
J-150
Toyota has had a lot of success with lagging behind. By being late into a category and letting others build the category first

This approach has worked for Toyota, and to a lesser extent Ford, in the past. But now the automotive industry is undergoing a once in a century transformation. Car companies cannot afford to "be late" when it comes to electrification, autonomous vehicles, and mobility services. Akio Toyota said last year "The automobile industry is changing at a speed far greater than anyone anticipated." It looks like Terashi San understands this in the context of EV. jasonj80
What is most interesting is that they will use a solid state battery in a year. Long term solid state battery's would be cheaper, charge faster, are less volatile and should have better range density.
CKNSLS
Since when is collaboration a bad thing? Seems like a smart move. Spread the R&D among others. Hasn't Ford done that with transmissions? https://www.fool.com/investing/general/2016/05/22/why-ford-and-general-motors-teamed-up-on-transmiss.aspx I guess when Ford does it-it's smart. When others do it they are behind.
