Its roughly a $900 a year savings getting a Fusion Hybird over a Fusion 1.5L at 25000 mile a year at $2.89 for gas. That works out to roughly saving $17.30 week in gas... It was also just for R&D on BEV vehicles.

BEV and even PHEV and hybrids were a low priority for Ford between 2015 and 2018. Offering those types of vehicles in the U.S. market was as you said, all about scoring PR and regulatory compliance points. The mindset at Ford has now changed. Ford management now realizes that electrification represents the future of the whole automotive industry. That's why Ford now has a goal of beating Toyota when it comes to sales of hybrid cars and trucks. I also think Ford is in the best position among all automakers, even Tesla and Rivian, to produce the first BEV pickup truck that's not a science fair project but something that real truck buyers want to buy. The business case for BEVs changed to the point they can now be sold profitably (unless you’re Tesla). Ford was simply not interested in chasing BEVs for PR purposes until Range improved and battery prices dropped. You really don’t understand business cases and decision making.
