rperez817
Smart move by Ford. They have already been collaborating with Mahindra on new product development, including BEV. https://media.ford.com/content/fordmedia/fna/us/en/news/2018/03/22/mahindra-and-ford-sign-mous-to-co-develop-midsize-and-compact-su.html
passis
Does this move isolate Ford India from the other subsidiaries? Will Ka/Figo be confined to India?
bzcat
I think this is really focused on cheap cars for the Indian market. Ford can't build them cheap enough to be competitive. Ford will probably continue to build Figo in India for export. Figo is considered "mid size" car in India. But for things that are smaller, Ford is going to rely on Mahindra to supply the engineering and hardware. This is a smart exit strategy because it keeps Ford in India (thru rebadged Mahindra in the new joint venture) but Ford won't have to invest any real money to design and build the cheap cars. Meanwhile, it also keep Ford's manufacturing intact in India so it can still export. Edited April 10, 2019 by bzcat
passis
I wonder if they will continue to build Ka in Bahia. Although volumes are good, margins in this segment are small, even in Brazil. GM has the best selling car overall (an entry car) here and strugles to make a profit.
theoldwizard
I wonder how much they had already invested in India.

In an article I read it said 2bi in the last 20 years. I just read that Ka will leave Europe at the end of the year.
passis
Ford India planning to sell Gujarat car plant due to low sales? The plant currently has a low capacity utilization. https://www.rushlane.com/ford-india-gujarat-plant-shut-down-12323856.html
RadicalX
Ford does not need to have two factories in Brazil and India, since the volume is small. Camaçari is important, because there Ford exports to all South America markets. It is important for Ford to make a partnership as GM did with the Chinese SAIC, which resulted in the GEM platform, but with Mahindra. I just hope it's a partnership, not just Mahindras with Ford's logo.
