2020 Ford Explorer

Recommended Posts

It's a lot better looking than I thought it was going to be............although that front end is still going to take getting used to.

BUT....that vertical touchscreen........no, just no! Horizontal ones a bad enough when they're just "tacked on" like an afterthought, but this is just ugly! Why the heck can't they just embed it into the dash properly? The Mustang shows it can be done and I'm sure even that one could be expanded to 10" wide (I believe it's 8" at present), as there's still quite a lot of plastic area surrounding the edges.

For me though, I'm still excited to learn about the RWD platform............mostly so we can take a stab at what the '23MY S650 may consist of! :)

I'm surprised Ford is still using Limited as a mid range trim level when it is being used as the top trim level in F-150.

They got rid of Sport in favor of ST so seems like a good time to switch out Limited for something more logical... like Titanium.

Don't they currently have an Explorer Ti that is above the Limited? Maybe they are planning another trim higher then the Limited down the road..

I just don’t get the “top level trim” vibe from the platinum. This looks like a base explorer with shiny wheels. I can’t see myself paying 50k+ for this over the xlt.

The Platinum has far more then simply shiny wheels.  It has the top motor and basically every option + some.  The interior is full leather - dash/door panels (on our 2017). Seats massage, cool and heat etc. Problem for me is I don't see a quantum leap to go from our 2017 to this - don't care for the 4Runner taillights or the vertical touchscreen.  However, the Aviator GT.............might be a different story.

because they can fit the smaller screen in the same place as the larger verticle screen. Cheaper engineering-not that asteically pleasing.

How cool would it be if you could replace the ford monitor with an android or apple tablet?

Download the Ford Vehicle "infotainment" app or whatever, and insert into the dash. The app recognizes the vehicle and activates the vehicle interface.

They could probably engineer swapable plates/plugs for the different interfaces.

Car is only 8 months old. Shouldn't need a firmware update

try shutting it off and restart 5-6 times every time and it didn't fix it. I just played some music on my phone and stuck it in the cup holder to amplify it.

8 months is a long time in the tech world ?

I am completely aware that it has more features, but looking at it from the outside, it doesn’t really stand out. In fact, watching the live stream yesterday I kept wondering what trim they were in because none of them looked more luxurious then the other.

From what I've seen the materials aren't really different, one just has more standard equipment than the other.

The problem is in a crash it could/would go flying about and become a misslle!

Yeah but, is that any different than the phone and other objects already put in the cupholder/dash?  You're right it would be probably stop them from doing it, but damn that's a stupid reason x.x

We have the 2.3L EB in our 2017 Explorer and it's a great engine.  I much prefer it to the V6.  Test drive one, it may surprise you.

I meant I want the 3.0L ecoboost. I realize 2.3eb or 3.5 atmo is plenty for most people, but I really like as much engine as possible. At the same time I don't need or want to pay for awd or high trim.

There's also the issue of V6s being fundamentally smoother than inline 4s.  Not that the 2.3eb has any NVH problems, just that the 3.0eb will be even smoother in the same vehicle.

I really like the design. It’s simple and keeps the elements that are great in the current design. Not over styled like most new vehicles.

the 10” screen doesn’t bother me. How do you better integrate a screen that tall? Either the dash gets really high and reduces visibility or the screen ends up really low and hard to see.

I don't love the grill and the curvature of the windshield, but everything else is nice. The windshield reminds me too much of the outgoing generation, which should be sent-off with a serious exorcism of any assembly plants involved during its tenure. Styling niggles aside, This new one looks good enough to do well if the platform is as much improved as the specs and details indicate.

Not if there's some kind of fastener that holds it in place

The issue is that Ford would be Liable for something like that due to crash testing standards-they give you a cell phone mount in the Chinese Escort, because they don't have that requirement-yet.

1. Good to hear that MAYBE they have their SUV 2nd and 3rd row somewhat fixed so MAYBE it's usable as a Utility, proof will be in pudding.

2. LOL at tablet stuck vertically, it's like they wanted to be Tesla but couldn't obviously pull it off so they just did that instead.  Horrifying...

3. Already have seen one shot where drivers leg is crammed right up against plastic cockpit, just what I want in my new $50k ride on a trip lasting longer than run to local Starbucks alone (which I'm convinced is about as far and how many people I think they do product testing with, small ones at that).

4. Looks like will be waiting in hopes mid cycle refresh will gives us shifters that aren't needlessly (and it seems proudly, given how they emphasized them in their pictures) taking up center console space and thus, if that ever happens, we'll get horizontal cup holders rather than joke and germ spreading vertical arrangement (but the necessary console shifters!).

Pretty F'd up launch for such an important vehicle IMO...

I am willing to bet you a pint of your favorite beer that the 2.3EB in a RWD Explorer will have similar performance numbers to the 3.5EB in the current AWD Explorer Sport.  Look at the performance of the 2.3EB in the 2018 Mustangs, it's amazing.

I agree it should be a lot closer.  I think the current platform requires a lot of torque management with the 3.5eb.  That won't be necessary with the new platform.

It's just that the 2.7 would be even better. I can see saving the 3.0 for Limited, ST, and Lincolns, but the 2.7 would give people buying a lower trim an engine option that provides a bump in power and refinement.

Or is it possible the 3.3/3.5 atmo carries on as the base engine and 2.3eb is the optional upgrade like it is now?

The 2.3eb is great but I'm spoiled by a similar level of power (300/300 ish) in my current turbo ranger that weighs about 1300 lbs less than a 19/20 Explorer.

I'd lay money on the new Explorer hanging close to that Ranger due to the transmission and power curve.  It's not all about peak numbers.
