Ford to move to Quarterly Sales Reports

Its more or less a relic of the 1960s to prove one upmanship

Monthly sales reporting in the U.S. auto market actually goes back to the 1990s. Chrysler Corporation was the first to do it, in 1991. All the other automakers followed the monthly approach by the mid 1990s. Prior to Chrysler's action in 1991, it was customary to report auto sales every 10 days. NYT times said the following. https://www.nytimes.com/1990/12/01/business/10-day-sales-chrysler-won-t-tell.html

"The 10-day report compiling dealers' sales was invented in the 1920's by Alfred P. Sloan Jr., the longtime chairman of General Motors, and his colleagues as a response to a lack of information about sales and inventory that had nearly caused GM to collapse. Other auto makers followed G.M. and the 10-day number grew into a reporting convention."

Tesla was the first major automaker to do quarterly sales reporting to media and investors in the 2000s. The other two U.S. domestic automakers started doing this more recently. GM in 2017, and Ford in 2019.

We need a definition for "major".

All 3 major U.S. domestic automakers will now do quarterly sales reporting. I bet the foreign automakers will join the club in 2019.

FCA is the first foreign automaker announcing that it will do quarterly sales reporting in the U.S., starting in Q3 2019. https://www.autonews.com/sales/fca-shift-quarterly-sales-reports-us-and-canada

Did we miss April sales results though?

They are finally up at carsalesbase.com. Separate listings for Ford and Lincoln.  See:

http://carsalesbase.com/us-car-sales-data/ford/

http://carsalesbase.com/us-car-sales-data/lincoln/

Sales of both are down (as is the case for car sales in general). I see that Lincoln numbers are softening considerably, turning around one of Ford's recent positive sales stories. My guess is this is in part due to a sales pause in advance of Aviator hitting the streets.

MKZ is a great success, which has no attention from Lincoln. ATS has never succeeded, CTS neither the MKZ sales. Lincoln Continental is a failure. The MKZ should have a successor

The continental is just missing something. I saw a beautiful white black label last week driving. It’s just missing a little something. I think marketing would be a start. The Escalade isn’t that good. Neither is the 300. But they have a social stigma. The continental needs some attention.

Pay attention to what does not give return or pay attention to the sedan that accumulates almost 1500 sales? If the MKZ had the interior of the Aviator and a renewed rear would be unbeatable. MKZ is a car that you want to die, but it insists on surviving, while the Continental you invest and does not generate any favorable results

I follow the Continental's sales since the premiere and the model has even gone from 1500 units a month. While the MKZ, which has decade of history and was once the best seller of Lincoln dies at a minimum, showing still potential. If the Cadillac had the MKZ, I wouldn't neglect it

What's up with the Ranger?  We are nearly 6 months in and sales appear to be sluggish compared to the Taco and Colorado.   I live in the land of every millennial with a job and mediocre credit score buying a new Truck or Jeep- I have only seen 4 Rangers and two were rentals!  Even with the limited early production numbers Fuzzy has been providing - the math says they are not selling nearly as many as they are building, not nearly at the pace of the 120k per year we heard about as the target.

No we aren't. They only just started shipping the week before Christmas. January was the first full month on sale.

That 120k number I threw out a year ago was a forecast. No telling what estimates are right now.

I still haven't seen any in my area-and its not like there isn't 1 million plus potential buyers in my area either.

I had such high hopes for Ford on this one.   I would say it is somewhat obvious this is not selling like we hoped it would.

As of today I have seen half as many Jeep Gladiators on the road as Rangers...Don't think the Jeeps were rentals.

5700 sales in April - that's about 1/2  to 2/3 of what you are building - no?

Yeah but RMC breaks it down and makes it purdy for us to understand, we are now spoiled...?

Ha, sorry!  I have them all pretty, I can post it here or in its own thread if we want?

And for fun, GM numbers:

XT5 and Escalade hold the whole Cadillac. Chevy crossovers and Camaro are going well. GMC is only with the growing Acadia and Buick is as strong with crossovers as Chevrolet. Strange is to notice the Buick Regal selling well

GM has to be concerned with the sales of the BOF SUV's from a plant perspective. Even at the profit they generate sales of 200K for an assembly plant is not good plant utilization.

Also losing 15% of your full sized truck market share doesn't help either
