Ford makes good trucks.. makes sense tesla would use them as service vehicles.

Now if only Ford could make an electric car that's worth a damn, they might have a better joke ?

Apparently you missed what is so funny about it

For a company that insists on doing EVERYTHING themselves they sure do rely heavily on Ford Vans.

Don't worry - the Tesla truck - the one that fits an F-150 in the bed! - is on the way!

Very negative NYT article went up today. I don't think Tesla goes out of business, as their brand and technology are probably worth more than the company. But I doubt Musk is going to continue much longer as CEO and the company will likely get bought out, allowing their products to be built by a company that knows how to build cars and that has a distribution network able to sell and service them.

I think Musk hopes Tesla will get a huge infusion of new cash from advance deposits for the new Model Y crossover after he unveils it next week. But here's the problem: actual production and delivery is, as I understand it, still a year or more away. Will the advance money flow in like it did for the Model 3?  We'll see.

Good luck finding a place to test drive it with them shutting down their showrooms and going full online sales (and possibly some repair centers too if I read correctly their nebulous talk about moving more repairs to customer locations).

Update from Tesla yesterday. https://www.tesla.com/blog/update-tesla-stores-and-pricing

  • More Tesla stores will be kept open than originally expected
  • All orders including those placed at stores are completed online, as Tesla has always done
  • Pricing on high end Model 3, all Model S, and all Model X will go up 3% on March 18
  • 7 day/1000 mi. return policy still in effect

I always uncertain what to believe about Tesla, but here's this:

The reason for the volte-face was not spelled out, but it paints a potentially worrying picture of corporate governance at the electric car OEM. Last week, The Wall Street Journal reported that most of Tesla's retail landlords had been given no notice as to the termination of leases, many of which had no cancellation clauses, thus exposing the company to a host of potential lawsuits.

What is clear is that Tesla sales in 2019 have been disastrous. InsideEVs, a publication close to Tesla, tracks US electric vehicle deliveries, and, according to its numbers, January and February deliveries were down by around 80 percent compared to the months leading up. Although Tesla said it would concentrate on making up volume in Europe and China, neither of those markets appear able to take up the US' slack.

Meanwhile, the spate of executive departures at Tesla continues unabated. The day after Tesla sent out invitations to the unveiling of the Model Y crossover, VP of Engineering Michael Schwekutsch announced his sudden departure. Schwekutsch was responsible for overseeing Tesla's drivetrain technology.

But wouldn't you figure that out before you make some big announcement that you're closing a ton of stores?

In a world where Elon Musk is the center of everything according to Elon Musk, it shouldn't matter because he should always get his way. According to Elon Musk, of course.

Yes.  Which is unfortunate that Tesla seems to be amateur hour right now, because "Tesla" the car maker has been perhaps as revolutionary to the auto industry  as Nikola Tesla was to electricity.

Interviews by Jalopnik found the planned move away from physical stores to be poorly messaged and chaotic. Even regional managers who oversee dozens of stores were kept in the dark. Commissions were cut, slashing many salaries 50 percent or more with no notice. Employees weren’t allowed to take paid time off out of concern everyone would use it to look for other jobs. And store managers scrambled just to keep morale from hitting rock bottom.

I think these folks have 2 or 3 main issues:

1.  They don’t understand simple economics.

2.  They hate internal combustion vehicles and think BEVs are going to save the planet.

3.  They love gadgets and a Tesla BEV is just another gadget (iphone, Alexa, etc.)

They think if they get a degree then somebody will just hand them a 6 figure job on the way out of the graduation ceremony.

They are woefully unprepared for the real world.

Those are the folks that Tesla should be recruiting and hiring. Fits in perfectly with Tesla's mission as a company. Here's what Tesla says about its mission.

Quote

"Tesla’s mission is to accelerate the world’s transition to sustainable energy.

As the world’s only fully integrated sustainable energy company, Tesla is at the vanguard of the world’s inevitable shift towards a sustainable energy platform"

More importantly, they were no longer getting commission for their sales, which for some employees amounted to a pay cut of 50 percent or more. It was hardly new for Tesla to change the compensation rates on the fly—it had happened at least twice in the last few months—but to eliminate it entirely meant salespeople who had previously been making close to six figures were now looking at take-home pay closer to $50,000, a pretty substantive cut when trying to support their families and pay their bills.

To add insult to injury, Tesla had offered employees a discount program at the end of 2018 that gave them the cars’ so-called self-driving package, an $8,000 value for free, plus $5,000 off any model, for a total discount of $13,000. According to Business Insider, the company also encouraged employees to trade in accrued paid time off towards the purchase of a car.

Read the linked article. The author of the article is positing that demand will "crater" in 2019 as the federal tax credit is halved. Everyone references what happened to the Leaf in Georgia after the state eliminated its tax credit at the end of 2015 - Leaf sales fell 89%.

Tesla is slated to sell more than 360K Model 3 cars this year.

Sales were down 31% 1Q19 vs. 4Q18.  Some of that is pull ahead sales due to the expiring tax credit last year but they're only projecting 300K - 400K TOTAL sales for 2019.   And they still can't make a sustainable profit.
