Ford's balance sheet for period ending September 30, 2018 shows the following debts.

  • $3.2B short term debt, payable within 1 year (automotive)
  • $47.5B short term debt, payable within 1 year (Ford Credit)
  • $11.4B long term debt (automotive)
  • $90.6B long term debt (Ford Credit)
  • $0.6B other long term debt

Total debt $153.3B

According to Ford Motor Credit's 10-Q from last month, they have $162B in assets and $146B in liabilities. Seems to me that adds up to a net positive position.

Maybe so but the article presented that total debt figure as though Ford was was on the verge of failing financially.

2 years ago before Hackett became CEO, a lot of people including me were concerned that Ford would go under or get acquired during the next economic downturn. Not just due to debt, but mismanagement as well. Now, I don't think that will happen despite the debt. Ford has been making a lot of smart decisions recently to stay relevant and healthy in the future. Partnering with VW on various things is one.

Hopefully, Ford will make more announcements soon regarding actual production plug-in vehicles. That may address at least some concerns that investors have.

The only people thinking that were the doom and gloom people.

All these people act as if Ford is losing money hand over fist every quarter.  They're still making billions of dollars.  If that's failing, sign me up.  The numbers might not be as good as they/we'd like, but hardly failing.
