Gas Octane vs. Mileage and Performance

I haven't seen or heard of anyone getting any significant performance gain from changing the exhaust or intake on newer Ford vehicles. Ford seems to be close to maxing out the factory performance.

The best bet for any performance increase is a tune from Livernois or similar outfit.

This is why to always use what is recommended in the manual. Using a higher octane more than what the engine calls for would work counter productive to engine performance and in gas mileage, not to mention the waste of money for premium gas.

Waste of money, yes. "Counter productive" as in worse HP and fuel economy ? Highly unlikely.

A few years ago, at an auto conference, there was a lively round table discussion with representatives from multiple major auto suppliers. The topic was "What if the 'standard' grade of gasoline in the US was 91 octane ?" All present agreed that it would help fuel economy A LOT !

I do know that EcoBoost engines at a lot of fuel under heavy loads to help cool the engine.

People who want MAXIMUM performance out of their EcoBoost (or other turbo engines) get a special "tune" for running E85. Fuel economy goes down the toilet but power goes way UP ! A turbo engine is a type of variable compression engine !
