Honda CRV Engine issues

Well, that's not good. For Honda...

"In some CR-Vs, gasoline can leak into the SUV's engine oil. That can eventually cause the engine to lose power or stall completely. Several Consumer Reports subscribers reported the issue which has also been the subject of of dozens of complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, according to the magazine. Many more owners have complained of the problem in online forums, Consumer Reports said."

Quote from Consumer Reports.

The engine issue involves 2017 and 2018 CR-V SUVs with Honda’s latest 1.5-liter turbo engine. Honda has sold more than 500,000 CR-Vs in the U.S. with that engine in those two model years. While Martin, at Honda, did not say how many of those cars might be affected, he did say, “The irregular high oil level condition is not as widespread as some internet chatter may imply.”

Honda CR-V owners who reached out to CR and NHTSA often said they believe gasoline is finding its way into their CR-V’s oil system. That’s something that shouldn’t routinely happen, experts say.

John German—a veteran automotive engineer and senior fellow at the International Council on Clean Transportation, who previously worked at Honda, Chrysler, and the Environmental Protection Agency—says that the problem of fuel mixing with oil probably stems from one of two causes: improperly designed fuel injectors that spray fuel directly onto the cylinder walls or the engine not heating up enough to vaporize gasoline left over in an engine cylinder.

Either could cause fuel to mix with the oil, diluting it and making it less effective at protecting an engine’s moving parts, say CR’s car experts. And over time, that could seriously damage the engine."

Honda has always been vastly overrated.

Honda did get lazy right after the Great Recession. Some of their cars from the early 2010s like 9th gen Civic, 2nd gen Insight, and CR-Z were underwhelming. But now Honda has its mojo back. Every Honda branded car, minivan, and SUV is best in class or close to it. Their motorcycles, ATVs, and power equipment are pretty good too.

Acura still has some of the bad stuff though, like ILX and certain versions of TLX.

Sorry, never saw it even in the 80's and early 90s when they were supposed to be on top of their game. They had issues just like everyone else. And we won't discuss their 5 speed auto transmission debacle from the early to mid 2000's.

I still say Honda if vastly overrated. If you're looking in that general direction, I'd say Toyota at least lives up to their reputation.

Toyota is no better than Honda - engine sludge, etc. But I wouldn't say they're overrated. Overhyped maybe, but outside of a few major issues like everyone else they've been really good for the last 20+ years and you can see that in resale value especially on older Hondas.

Honda Elements are holding their value very well despite it getting harder and harder to find one with less than 100k miles.

It is actually amazing to see what Elements and FJ's will sell for 80% of sticker and 100K on the odometer is not an uncommon sale price.

Element was always a weird car, but their owners LOVED them.

Those two models had a unique combination of weirdness, character, and durability.

The SC version of Honda Element looked pretty decent IMO.
