Apple carplay

Recommended Posts

Waiting on my 19 F350, moving up from an 07 f250. Lots of technology in the new truck what are everyone opinions on the sync and CarPlay in the newer vehicles ... I looked at it a little bit on the test drive of the 18 but looking for some real world use info.

Just received my 2019 F-350 with Sync 3 and I use an iPhone. In this configuration, a few apple apps work on the 8" screen, including Apple Maps (important for me), and music. Don't know about Android phones or the plain Sync.

With AppLink, you can use Waze directly on the screen. I've come to like it very well. I don't use CarPlay much as I don't really have the need, but do use Pandora and Waze through AppLink.

The next version of iOS will support GMaps and Waze through CarPlay.

I use pandora through CarPlay quite frequently. Works pretty well.

What’s the difference between applink and CarPlay? If pandora works with CarPlay I should be able to use amazon music though it also then?

Carplay takes over the sync 3 system completely. You can only use apps that carplay supports. Today that does not include Waze or Google Maps. With IOS 12 it will allow more apps to be used within Carplay.

Applink allows an individual app on the phone to interact with sync 3. It only works with specific apps that are applink ready.

I havent used amazon music personally, but Pandora, Spotify and my own (abbreviated) iTunes library I keep on my phone all work great through CarPlay.

I have a USB stick in my other car with my entire library on it and Ill bring over to the new one for longer road trips and whatnot.

Seems like a lot of new tech to figure out but definitely going to be very useful

Yes, Amazon music does work through CarPlay. It's not as refined as Pandora through there though.

Well that’s good to know, hopefully an ios update will make more apps work and others work smoother. Once the truck comes in I’ll spend some time messing around with it, thanks for all the replies

Glad to hear the new ios will pick up more of the apps. Looking forward to what will work with the release this week.

In another month or so, if it doesn't hack this thread, I can recap my learning experience using android.  I didn't order navigation just for this reason.

I use CarPlay every day.  Google maps, Apple Maps and Waze are now all supported.  The music integration is spot on too. (not mention phone and messages).  Everyone seems to have a smartphone these days, factory navigation is almost unneeded at this point.

My one problem with CarPlay is I can't use voice commands to play music from the flash drive I keep in my car. I have to thumb through it manually or disable CarPlay to use voice commands. Kind of dumb.

Well, CarPlay is meant to control your iOS device, not devices external to it.

Understood, but if I'm on the main sync screen, I should be able to use sync independently of CarPlay

Yes. I tried it yesterday.

My system is messed up though, it won't accept updates and it sometimes doesn't work at all. It's due for its first oil change so I'll have the dealer look at it.

Did you try a reboot?  push and hold the power and next track  ( >| ) button for a few seconds.

I didn't know that was a thing.

Ive tried updating through FordPass and my home WiFi and it won't even find updates and I know there's one available

USB updates from owner.ford.com are more reliable and a lot faster.

Hi fuzzy.  Make it a 32GB flash drive then. That is what the Ford/Lincoln Owner websites specify as necessary. Some people have stated they used 16GB drives, but Ford says minimum 32GB.

Good luck.
