Ford Territory revealed as new budget SUV for China

Recommended Posts

Ford released some new info on Territory.

It will have different powertrain from Yusheng 330.

Yusheng 330 uses Mitsubishi 4G15 engine and 6 speed auto (not sure if it is a Ford 6F35 or something else).

Territory will use Ford 1.5T and CVT (not sure where the CVT is coming from). And it will have optional 48V hybrid system.

Also in the news, Territory will be the first new Ford model to go on sale in the new "Ford" dealership. Part of the reason why Ford sales have fallen dramatically is that is has been fighting with Chang'an on restructuring the sales channel. Basically, Ford wants to combine the three separate Ford dealer networks in China: Chang'an Ford, Jianlging Ford, and Ford (imported models) into a single "Ford" dealer system. Ford finally got Chang'an and Jiangling to agree to the combination earlier this year and the re-branding will commence with the launch of Territory.

If you are still confused, this is what's happening: Territory is a Jiangling Ford vehicle but will go on sale at Chang'an Ford dealers, which are being re-branded as "Ford" dealers.

Current Ford models are sold in these three different dealer bodies:

Chang'an Ford

Fiesta (discontinued)

Escort

Focus

Mondeo

Taurus

EcoSport

Kuga

Edge

Jiangling Ford

Transit

Tourneo

Everest

JMC Baodian

JMC Yuhu

JMC Teshun

Yusheng S330

Yusheng S350

Ford

Edge (discontinued)

Explorer

Expedition

Fiesta ST

Focus ST

Mustang

Ranger

F-150 Raptor

Pricing for Territory was released today. It splits the difference between EcoSport and Kuga. Also about 35% more expensive than Yusheng S330.

MSRP in RMB

EcoSport $79,800 - $155,800

S330 $88,000 - $139,600

Territory $119,800 - $169,800

Kuga $169,800 - $249,800

Also see the new unified Ford China website... https://www.ford.com.cn/vehicles/

All three Ford brands (Ford, Chang'an Ford, Jiangling Ford) are now under the same dealer network. Ford is the first foreign car company to attempt wrestling the marketing and distribution of its brands under a unified network. Other split brands (VW, Toyota, Honda, Mazda) remain separate.

Not suggesting they import the Chinese market Territory to the US - just use the name on the upcoming "Baby Bronco"...Ford has some great names in the hopper for upcoming as yet unnamed CUV's for NA market...Maverick, Territory, Everest, Mountaineer....just a couple off the top of my head...

Mountaineer is better than maverick

Why does Chang'an Ford have ROW Sedan Products (assumed to be built in China also)? I'm assuming Jiangling is seperate because they where selling their own truck/van based products also from the other two and the straight Ford brand is imports from ROW.

Sedans are big in China. Crossovers have made headway, but sedans are still the biggest market in China and looks to continue that way.

JMC is separate due to its different ownership structure. JMC is a JV between Ford, Changan, and JMCG with Ford owning the largest portion. It makes JMC and Ford branded products. JMC and Ford branded vehicles have shared a lot due to Ford owning a portion of JMC outright. For instance, the new JMC Veyron is the second generation Ford Cargo.

Changan-Ford is a 50/50 JV between the two automakers. They have largely not shared much in terms of platforms, etc due to the different structure.

It's definitely not a Ford based platform, so doubt that it will be seen out side of China

There are rumours that this Territory is coming to South America. It was one of Ford's highlights during last year's São Paulo motor show. I'm curious about its platform and its implementation in regional plants.

Because that's just how things work in China. You have to form a JV with a local company in order to build and sell cars locally. Ford entered China with Jiangling first when it was limited to a commercial vehicle JV producing Transit vans. Ford made too many mistake with this one so the JV scope was too narrow. They didn't have license to build passenger vehicles.

After Jiangling Ford, another Chinese car company FAW approached Ford to setup a passenger car JV. FAW wanted to license Lincoln Towncar to replace its aging Honqi sedans and was willing to form a JV and build Ford (or Lincoln cars) in exchange. Ford decided to turn them down (HUGE mistake!) but instead offered to sell Towncar in CKD format to them. FAW took the deal and assembled a bunch of Towncars. FAW eventually turned to Audi and Toyota to replace its Honqi sedans and the rest was history... FAW Toyota and FAW Audi are still around today.

Ford had to form another JV much later to make passenger cars. The Chinese Govt decided Ford should partner with Chang'an which at that time had no foreign partners. There was a reason for that... Chang'an is located in the backwaters and it was the least competitive of the 5 old workers collective that had been transformed into car companies.  Chang'an Ford also involved Mazda and Volvo at the time, and Ford again made too many mistakes and ended up having to give up a bunch of assets when it sold Mazda and Volvo.

Ford's retail imports started around the same time as Chang'an Ford, mostly just a couple of showrooms in Beijing and Shanghai to sell Lincoln and a few Ford Explorer. Prior to that Ford only sold fleets to the Chinese Govt directly. Ford exported tens of thousands of Tempo and Aerostar  to the Chinese Govt in the late 1980s as part of this direct sale program.

A few years after Chang'an Ford was up and running, Ford invited Chang'an to buy a stake in Jiangling so it can change the board and move to take control of Jiangling Ford JV and the JMC brand. Chang'an's part ownership also now allow Jiangling Ford to gain the necessary permits to produce passenger vehicles (e.g. Everest, Tourneo, Yusheng brand SUVs and now Territory). Jiangling is now a minority owner in Jiangling Ford with Ford being the biggest shareholder.

Jiangling still operates its own Landwind brand and Jiangling Isuzu JV. And they just entered into a new JV with Renault to make EVs - all these are outside of Jiangling Ford and JMC and unrelated to the Ford business.

I heard this decision is being reassessed due to dealerships pressure. Does anyone know a bit more on this?

It would be a big mistake for Ford Brasil to bring a Chinese car. The Media has already massaced the model. They Should bring Escape or Puma

Agree. They should make Puma alongside Ecosport ( in a new generation around 4 metres ) and import Maverick (from Mexico) and Escape ( where from? ). But none of these models are around the corner for us... And dealers are getting so anxious that they'd rather have people coming in to see a doubtful vehicle than not coming at all. But that could hurt the company image.

The new Escape will be made in General Pacheco (Argentina), which opens the possibility of exporting to Brazil

First I had heard of the Escape being made in Argentina, but since they are ending Focus production there, it makes sense.

I don't even think it would be a question if its made in Argentina that it would be sold in Brazil as well.

It will be difficult for the Brazilian to swallow a Chinese car. Jac and Chery try hard, but can't even reach competitiveness. The Press has massively disclosed that the Territory is a Yusheng, and this will cause negative repercussions. Brazilian buys Ford because it is Ford, a brand that is 100 years ago in Brazil. They are traditional and do not trust the hard money (because the price of a CUV in Brazil is stratospheric) in a product that the press discloses as doubtful. Territory is only back in Brazil because the dealers are terrified with the closing of the factory of São Bernardo do Campo and afraid of Ford close also the Camaçari factory. The right decision would be to bring only Puma and Kuga (under another name, because Escape in Portuguese means exhaust)

That's great news that the Escape will finally be produced in South America, if confirmed.

But coincidentally, Motor1 Brasil just released spyshots of Territory near Ford's testing/development centre, near São Paulo.
