Ford Territory revealed as new budget SUV for China

Recommended Posts

The article claims it's a reskinned version of this:

Not reskinned. Just rebadged.

Also the article is slightly incorrect. Yusheng 330 is not "made by Ford’s Chinese joint-venture partner Jiangling (JMC)". It is made by Jiangling Ford. And JMC and Yusheng are both brands under Jiangling Ford and not Jiangling itself (in case you are wondering, Jiangling's brand is Landwind).

So Yusheng 330 is a Ford vehicle. Ford reports sales of JMC and Yusheng brands in its Chinese (and worldwide) sales. Ford Territory is probably going to cost a little bit more than Yusheng 330.

I was going to say, looking at it, it has alot of Ford DNA in it- the side sculpting for one.

Toyota previously sold a Corolla Edge in Australia and so blocked FoA from using the Edge name.

Logically, you'd think that they would use the Territory name but no, they went with "Endura"

and now seems they gave the Territory name to some Chinese SUV......Yeesh.

This is the same as the Kuga-Escape thing, it took FoA years to realize that Kuga name didn't work

but by now it's so old that Escape name didn't give them the bump in sales expected..

Seems that brains aren't important when you have a marketing degree.....

Maybe Ford should let the Chinese copy their vehicles,

they seem to do a better job of it.....for their market.

Here is Ford China's June 2018 sales report in case anyone is interested: https://s22.q4cdn.com/857684434/files/doc_news/2018/07/Ford_Announces_Half_Year_Results_Reinforces_Its_Commitment_to_China.pdf

Ford sold 2,500 Yusheng 330 YTD vs. 11k last YTD. I'm guessing the Yusheng brand really hasn't resonated with Chinese consumer so maybe Ford is just going to consolidate it under the blue oval brand. Yusheng is sold in the same Ford dealers that sells Everest and Transit, and separate from the Ford dealers that sells Escort/Focus/Kuga etc.

Territory will be available in 3 flavors: gasoline, 48V hybird, and PHEV... This certainly means it will have Ford engine, not the Mitsubishi 4G series engine that is this every low budget Chinese car (including Yusheng 330). So this is how Ford plans to differentiate it with Yusheng 330.

The Territory will have a standard gasoline version, in addition to 48-volt mild hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants. The Territory also contains some pretty standard tech, like adaptive cruise control, automatic braking and an embedded modem.

First real photo of Territory.

And Yusheng 330 for comparison.

It's increasingly looking like Territory will replace Yusheng 330... rather than sell along side it - basically, Territory is Yusheng 330 mid cycle update. Based on Chinese media reports, gasoline engine Territory is using the same cheap and ancient Mitsubishi 4G15 engine as Yusheng 330 (pretty much all Chinese brand cars use the same Mitsubishi 4G family engine that first came out in the early 1980s). Remains to be seen what engine the 48V hybrid and PHEV will use.

If the Territory and Yusheng 330 are in fact FAPA developed vehicles, then the name Territory would add weight

that Geelong was behind this.... I remember scuttlebut about an SUV project a few years back but zero details.

Yusheng 330 is FWD transverse. There was report a few years back that Ford Taiwan was shipping the entire Escape production line and tooling to China but we never heard what became of it. I think it ended up being used for the Yusheng 330.

Yusheng 350 and JMC Yuhu are body on frame vehicles and we had previously speculated that they are based on the previous gen Ranger and Everest - which makes sense... but no confirmation.

Can confirm the latter and pretty sure the former is Mazda based Escape/Tribute recycled as Territory and Yusheng 330

That's the only way Ford could produce and sell it for less than Ecosport.......

Not necessarily, Territory may be Chinese domestic product only.

.

Not suggesting they import the Chinese market Territory to the US - just use the name on the upcoming "Baby Bronco"...Ford has some great names in the hopper for upcoming as yet unnamed CUV's for NA market...Maverick, Territory, Everest, Mountaineer....just a couple off the top of my head...

After the Fusion debacle with internet searchs Ford will never call two different vehicles the same name.
