Ford's 3rd Truck / Unibody Truck [MERGED]

Recommended Posts

So I was thinking about this some more... I realize that P758 will probably have longer wheelbase than Focus or Escape to have a proper cargo area.

So that probably means CX758, assuming it shares that platform and wheelbase with P758 will be bigger than Escape but maybe not quite as big as Edge. Basically, I think CX758 is the "3-row" Escape that we thought was coming with the new Escape. But I now think Ford has decided to leave Escape as 2-row (why mess with successful formula?) and will use CX758 to address the compact 7 seat CUV niche to replace Grand C-Max.

CX430 --> replace C-Max

Escape --> Escaoe

CX758 --> replace Grand C-Max

Edge 5 seat --> Edge 5 seat

Edge 7 seat --> Edge 7 seat and replace S-Max

Explorer --> Explorer and replace Galaxy and Flex

Replaces subcompact Brazilian Courierrename it Ranchero?

Desperate to hold on to its truck primacy, Ford is working on a new compact pickup that could find its way into the U.S. product lineup by 2022. Ford is preparing to replace its aged Courier subcompact pickup truck, built in Brazil and based on a two-generation old Fiesta platform introduced in 1998.

Sources familiar with Fords future product plan say the automaker is considering it for the U.S. market. It would slot below the Ford Ranger midsize pickup arriving in U.S. dealerships early next year, but would be bigger than the current Brazilian Courier. The European Union market has been buying larger vehicles in recent years, including pickup trucks, and so the Courier replacement will be built on the next-generation Focus platform, sources say.

As a unibody pickup, it would have nothing like the profit margin of a Ford F-Series, or even the upcoming U.S. Ranger. It would, potentially, help Ford regain its lead in U.S. pickup sales, and secure the automakers truck bragging rights.

Although the Ford F-Series is having a record sales year in the U.S., with 451,138 delivered in the first half of 2018a 4.9 percent increase over the first half of 2017General Motors has sold more pickup trucks overall. Sales of the Chevrolet Colorado jumped 38.9 percent for the same period, contributing to first-half GM pickup truck sales o 478,671, including Chevy Colorado and Silverado, and GMC Canyon and Sierra.

While that lead of 27,533 for the first half of 18 could easily be overcome by Ranger sales next year, a smaller, compact Ford pickup would lock up the bragging rights if there is no GM response.

Ford will introduce a new Focus for the EU and other market in 2019 to replace a model that has been on the market since 2012, though not for the U.S. North American production of that car initially was to move from the Michigan Wayne Assembly plant to make space for the new Rangers and upcoming Broncos production, first to Mexico, and then to China as President Trump sought to renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). Ford has since decided to cut the Focus sedan and hatchback from the U.S. market by next year. It will be replaced instead by a wagon/crossover slotting between the EcoSport and Escape, to target such models as the popular Subaru Crosstrek.

That Focus-based compact Ford crossover is scheduled to make its debut here in the 2020 model year, and it will be built in the Cuautitlan, Mexico, assembly plant, replacing Fiesta hatchback and sedan production in that factory. So new Courier production would be a natural for that plant, as NAFTA protects truck production in Mexico and Canada from the 54-year-old Chicken Tax. Prospects for the compact Ford pickup coming to the U.S. market appears largely determined by tariffs and trade deals negotiated by the Trump administration in the next 24 months.

Theres one other open question: Whether Ford would stick with the Courier name for the U.S. market. May we suggest another classic Ford name? Ranchero.

.

No, you may not.....leave Ranchero in the history books.

I'd prefer a new name, too. This fashion of Ford to pick up entirely new cars and put names of old cars (Escort, Maverick, Bronco, Mach 1) do not please me one bit. It seems that lacks creativity to create a new name Edited by RadicalX

Original name for Fusion was Futura...but Fords' lawsuit against Pepboys blew up in their face when the judge ruled that Ford could not ever use that name again as long as Pepboys uses it....

Several names that can be used in a truck name...wondering of FCA still owns "Tradesman" and "Adventurer" for a cargo and personal transport application?

Futura sounds like it's right out of the 60's.

Courier is well known in ROW as Fords small pick up

The name was used globally before Ranger name was adopted in the 2000s

Courier was well known here until it was replaced by the Ranger back in the '80s. IIRC, it was a rebadged Mazda (also ironic, given that the subsequent Mazda trucklet was a rebadged Ranger).

I wouldnt mind if they used the Courier name again. My grandfather had an 82 XLT in that powder blue color that Ford had at the time. (Anyone remember what the heck the exact name of that color was by chance?)

Lots of fond memories riding around in that truck...

Courier was introduced in the US market in 1972 as a response to Toyota and Datsun that were very popular at the time....to get around the "chicken tax"...they came into port without the bed attached and it was later installed upon arrival...

Presenting a 1972 Ford Courier...

Wow, I completely forgot about that truck. My friends Dad had a brown one for quite a while. However, it was a pretty unremarkable vehicle if my memory serves me correctly.
