New MKC to be called Corsair (maybe)

Recommended Posts

"Ford Motor Co. has told U.S. dealers that the next-generation Lincoln MKC will be renamed the Corsair when the compact luxury crossover is redesigned in 2020, Automotive News has learned. Dealers were shown the Corsair, along with the next-generation Ford Escape, Explorer, Mach 1 battery-electric crossover, a small off-road SUV and a Lincoln Continental sedan with suicide doors late last month at a meeting in Orlando, according to those in the room. But the sources cautioned that Ford could change the Corsair's name before the vehicle goes into production."

My problem is that it sounds like an old name.

Well to be fair people are naming their children old classic names of late. I don't hate the name; Its still better than the stupid letter/number that everyone else uses. It was one thing when they had meaning but now it is just garbage.

But honestly, how many buyers remember Corvair? I think the only thing that really matters is how it sounds.

"Unsafe at any speed" The name is brought up in almost every College marketing class for the first product liability safety disaster a company had to deal with wide spread television viewing of it.

I can get use to Corsair, I like it better than Mariner and MUCH better than Nautilus. Sure it will elicit some memories for people who know automotive history but most won't and those that do will get over it when they see the car which I think looks pretty great.

I think the most regrettable thing about Corsair is that it has adorned these previous Fords.

I'm intrigued by that suicide-door version of the Continental. Automotive News is a credible source...why would Ford go to the considerable expense of making this change to a vehicle it plans to discontinue?

I would say retrofitting Suicide Doors on the current Continental would be a huge waste of money, they either do it from the start or they don't do it at all. The Continental is particularly dated news with Aviator arriving on an awesome new platform.

Had no idea that was the origin of the name. I guess that's where the Navy got it from.

Well, at least the Cyrus name that came from the aquatic-themed Matthew McConaughey ad featuring the new Lincoln Navigator driving off a ferry boat named Cyrus is not being used, at least not yet. You may recall there was some speculation that that name was being slyly put out there in a hiding in plain sight scheme.

That was referencing the first MKC commercial with the Bull which was named "Old Cyrus", had nothing to do with their naming intentions.
