mackinaw
The assembly process is like a well-choreographed ballet. Amazing how the robots install the dashboard.
tbone
The assembly process is like a well-choreographed ballet. Amazing how the robots install the dashboard. Yes, I found that to be the most interesting piece of all.
fuzzymoomoo
I cant speak for the body shop process as I have never been to that part of the plant (Ive spent every day of my time at MAP on door line except for 5 days), but for the most part it is that automated. That IP robot is different, we didnt have that. People do that job using hydraulic jigs at all Ford North American plants.
fuzzymoomoo
The assembly process is like a well-choreographed ballet. It is. 5 years in and I still find myself looking around in awe of whats going on around me.
jpd80
There was an interesting piece on automation on John McElroy's show not so long ago There was an expert there explaining the pros and cons of robots and how the expense is sometimes not worth the time savings - I think it was aimed more at tesla 3 build issues the build quality is quite poor apparently. So maybe robots work at some plants but the cost was prohibitive at others like MAP/Thailand.. Edited May 11, 2018 by jpd80
Assimilator
Ford of Europe likes to debut cars close to production, Ford of NA likes to show them off at least 12 to 24 months in advance of availability which is a habit I wish they would break. Ford is by far the worst offender in North America.
fuzzymoomoo
I think these are preproduction as well, I saw a few MK3 in the video.
ice-capades
Couldn't help but notice in the video but I didn't see any Chinese workers in the plant. Interesting.
jpd80
Not surprising when that plant is in Germany......
ice-capades
Not surprising when that plant is in Germany...... Well that explains it! With all the talk about the next Focus coming from China I wasn't even thinking about Germany! Thanks!
Fordowner
That is pretty amazing, just thinking about all the Math/Calculations and engineering that went in to designing those robots and the manufacturing process makes my head hurt! For some reason i really like the look of the FOCUS lettering on the back hood. Still not sold on the grill but the back and hood look great. I think the Focus has always been one of the better looking small entry level cars. It looks like it drives well. Too bad it got killed by the auto transmission they put in it. MKII
SOP was May 8 for the MK4 at Saarlouis. The video was shot April 24-25 as Fuzzy stated alongside the still in production MK3.
Assimilator
Are they still building the previous gen Focus alongside the new Focus in Germany? It looks that way in the video.

Just an FYI, what we are getting in North America is slightly different than that and also imported from China. Get ready for a long wait.

I guess we will see the Focus Active at the Detroit or LA Auto show later this year. I think they'll use Detroit for the Bronco and maybe the Baby Bronco.
