MKC replacement may be a crossover coupe in 2022

Recommended Posts

While crossovers have been a thing for more than a decades now, the crossover coupe niche isnt as big, despite BMW having started the trend with the X6 back in 2007. But more and more automakers are joining the market and Lincoln is now the latest manufacturer that wants a piece of the action.

The new crossover coupe will most likely get its juice from Fords small-displacement EcoBoost gasoline engines, but it will also benefit from Fords hybrid gasoline-electric powertrains, which will help the brand meet Chinas stringent targets for electrified vehicles.

I'd really like there to be 2 Cuvs smaller than the nautiluX

imho the main diff would be engines/sport [2.7/3.0T+electrics] more than size = Macan-killer = prolley smallest cD6

Perhaps already use the 3.3 T engine seen in those oil specs. I like to see that Lincoln will follow a younger coupes style, even if it is in a CUV. By the way, do you want something more jovial and millennium than a CUV?

I don't think they can outright replace MKC with just a crossover coupe. That'd limit the market/appeal too much on their smallest product. I could see them offering a crossover coupe variant of MKC's replacement (whatever name it gets.....i.e. "Mariner" and "Mariner Sport" or something to that effect.)

I believe that this can become a differential in the face of competition

You mean offering both? Or making MKC a coupe shape only?

It's differentiating for sure, but look at sales of the X4/X6 - they sell a fraction of them compared to the X3/X5 they're based on - both because of increased price and decreased functionality. That's why I'm for offering both, as you'd be severely limiting the market appeal with only a coupe shape available, but offering both can appeal to a broader audience. You follow the same plan as those models too - retain everything forward of the B-pillar, and just chop the roof in the back. The full width lightbar will also lend itself very well to this type of product.

Perhaps a variant, as occurs with GLE and GLE coupe. I'm starting to think it's risky, too. But X4 and X6 are not references in design. I always thought these cars very ugly (the whole line BMW X)

I've been seriously considering a MKC as a replacement to my Escape when the time comes. I was mostly waiting for the 8 speed to come. But if it's going to a coupe looking vehicle, I can already cross that off my list. Can you say Honda CrossTour? Flop!

I believe it is a matter of time before the CUVs and SUVs coupes start to grow in the market. Mercedes has already revealed a concept of crossover sedan, even many consider a freak. Crosstour was a vehicle launched in the wrong time, where cars were worth more than CUVs and SUVs

Crosstour was just plain hideous regardless of what form it was. Lower it to sedan height and it still would've been ugly.

I have a hard time believing any publication that can't spell Nightmare in the title of an article.

Lincoln said it's adding 4 new utilities so a coupe-like Crossover would be a nice addition I would think, similar to what BMW and Mercedes are doing. As for MKC, if they intend to replace it in 2022, that means it would have to remain in production alongside the new 2020 Escape which would complicate that changeover signficantly...unless they have alternative plans like a 1 or 2 year hiatus. Since MKC just got a facelift 1 model year prior to the all-new 2020 Escape, I would not be entirely surprised if it's not in-sync with the next Escape. MKC is 2 years newer than the current Escape so a 2022 replacement would lineup with their strict investment cycles.

I think Lincoln will eventually have 7 different size utilities

1. Compact coupe: based on the short C baby Bronco

2. Compact long: based on next gen Escape

3. Midsize coupe: based on next gen Edge

4. Midsize long: based on the next gen Edge

5. Large: Aviator

6. Fullsize: Navigator

7. Jumbo: Navigator L

and a subcompact UV based on C2, X1, GLA, Q3 rival
