Tesla Inc (TSLA.O) on Wednesday pushed back its target for volume production on its new Model 3 sedan by about three months, saying it was difficult to predict how long it would take to fix all production bottlenecks.

 

The company also reported its biggest quarterly loss ever, sending shares down nearly 5 percent after hours as the loss was bigger than analysts had expected.

 

The company said it now expects to build 5,000 Model 3s per week by late in the first quarter of 2018 from its original target date of December.

Tesla Inc. reported a fourth-quarter loss of $675.4 million, or $4.01 a share, on revenue of $3.29 billion, marking the Palo Alto car company's biggest quarterly loss ever.

The company partly blamed the figure, which was significantly worse than the $121 million it lost in the same quarter last year, on high costs related to the production of its long-awaited Model 3 electric sedan.

Tesla on Wednesday advised that production rates of the Model 3 could be 2,500 cars a week by the end of March and 5,000 cars a week at the end of June. Last fall, the company had said it would be producing 5,000 cars a week by the end of 2017.

 

But hey, at least they managed to put one in space, right?

The real questions to ask are, why is is costing so much to increase production and why is it still taking so long?

 

And anyone still believing Musk's production timetable has rocks in their head........

 

Ford's manufacturing division can't even accurately forecast how many vehicles they can produce in a given week. Allocation for a scheduling week often results in a notice that the "Plant is Full" and that allocation will roll over to the following week.

Ford's problem is inadequate production capacity and scheduling,

Tesla's problem is inadequate production.

 

If you were a Tesla dealership, guess what you would be telling your Tesla 3 buyers,

your build number is 325,286, call me January 2020 for a production update....

Trust me it isn't limited to actual whole units. FCSD is in the worst shape I can remember In the >20 years I've been wrenching- even worse than the Nasser era. Recalls upon recalls upon recalls with parts backorders for all parts (not just FSAs) out of control.

Flipping orange ANTIFREEZE was temporarily backordered in my area this week, in part because of the 1.6 GTDI Fireball ver2.0 recall.

There is continually part of the 6F35 Party Pack ® on backorder. For about 6 months it was the seal kit. For a while it was converters, now its pumps.

DPoS6 parts are always questionable as to wether you get them since that fiasco began.

Explorer and PIU recall carbon monoxide fix parts are on and off of backorder constantly too.

And on and on and on....

 

Nothing pisses a customer off faster than "Sorry sir or ma'am we have your transmission scattered across a bench but that part won't be available till middle of next month at the earliest". The dealer gets blamed till they actually get mad enough to call the customer no help line. Then they realize that not only is their new vehicle faulty, corporate bumbles things so badly they can't even supply replacement parts in a timely manner. How many of you would be repeat buyers at that point?

^^^^^^ ditto! Not to mention the warranty times ford is paying for repairs is laughable at best. Its down right highway robbery. Its like playing at a casino, the cards are always stacked for the house. Good techs are leaving at an alarming rate. Some techs just bitch to bitch and some are just out of touch with reality. But Im telling you these issues are a real problem. Then ford puts out a time study video that is insulting. Micheal B. and Santos just say it is what it is. The corporate side cares very little for service side. The FSEs are now just rotunda tool salesman. The new ones dont even work on cars.

In a nut shell, ford needs to open the purse and fix some of these issues. Get better suppliers, pay reasonable times, and listen to the engineers. Im sure the R&D people have got to be giving feed back to the bean counters but are overruled by the mighty dollar.

Whats worse is a lot of those issues could very easily be fixed in the Assembly plants, but a lot of times they dont just for the sake of hitting numbers. I see it every day and it really annoys me.

Notice comes in January. I call dealer..."parts not in-we will call you when in". I call back the other day after hearing nothing. 5 minutes on hold then ..."sorry, we have one side but not the other-we will call you".

 

Think of the liability ammo this provides the legal profession. The recall scares the hell out of you, but they are not prepared to respond-as they urge you to do for your safety.

 

And Hackett wants to cut costs. Loyal Ford guy here who has another sip of Kool-Aid.

 

Typical buyer however for sure will be listening to those Toyota ads! No clue that Toyota, Honda or Korea are any different but my bet is they probably are.

 

I think if Mullaly got things on track, they should bring him back for another tour of duty.

Thx-and I guess if I were drafting that recall notice I would have clearly stated.." As soon as our supplier (Takata) addresses our supply requisitions"-or words to that effect. Put the burden on Takata where it belongs. IMO

 

Again, I'm a Ford guy and I accept the "shit happens" thing. The typical unbiased owner however says.."what BS-they tell me I'm in danger but they (FORD) don't have the parts".

To be fair Hackett may be either cutting more or maintaining the previous cuts to get the products back on track. Hard to say. If they were cutting costs and cutting product development like they were the last couple of years I’d be more concerned. I’m willing to give him the benefit of the doubt for another year or so.

I think Tesla is demonstrating the fact that volume manufacturing of complicated product with huge supply chain is hard... There is a reason why there hasn't been a new successful car company starting from scratch in the US since Chrysler.

 

It's relatively easy to design or engineer a car. You just need a few talented people to lead a small team. It's different when you have to build it.

 

But it must vexes Ford (or GM) executives that Tesla is not held to the same financial rules.
