HofstraJet
Does anyone know if the 2018 Navigators have metal oxide or something else in the windshield that would block RFID? My toll transponder and community gate opener transponder don't work when mounted on the windshield. If so, is there a clean spot where they can be mounted to work (I have read that many vehicles with this type of windshield have a spot for toll transponders). Thanks! TLew
I just drove my wife's new Navigator home last night, and I put the toll tag to the right of the mirror. Looking at the website, it shows that it is correctly pulling for tolls, so that spot seems open. Also, the radar detector worked fine in the middle of the windshield, so I'm not sure what issues you were encountering.
HofstraJet
My SunPass doesn't work consistently no matter where I mount it (tried the frit next to rear view mirror area and assorted other areas). On the SunPass system, they can charge you based on your license plate so I can see when I am charged based on the transponder and when I am charged based on the plate. Transponder worked 1/16 times in past few weeks - rest were based on license plate cameras. They sell an external transponder, but your account has to be reviewed before they will sell you one! Not sure what the big issue is there. Same issue for my community gate transponder - had to do an external mount (small mostly clear sticker blends with headlight, so not too bad) And now my Passport 9500ix radar detector has trouble locking onto GPS (the GPS works fine if I open the sunroof and hold it outside, so the unit is working properly). Tried various mounting locations - same issue. I've read that these types of windshields also cut down on a radar detector's efficiency. Ugh. Not spending on a built in as I don't do that much driving on open roads (usually in traffic commuting). All that is enough to convince me that there's some coating or metal baked into/onto the windshield to prevent signals from passing through reliably. TLew
All that is enough to convince me that there's some coating or metal baked into/onto the windshield to prevent signals from passing through reliably. That's interesting to me, because one of the things I've noticed is that the car is lacking tint. I know this is due to differing regulations state to state, but I was just thinking I needed to get the windows tinted and was also going to put some Llumar on the windshield which I've done before in their clear versions. My guess is the rear windows are actually colored rather than tinted, and that means hardly any UV protection or heat reflection advantage. Thinking about it in that perspective, I'm wondering if they would have put some coating on the windshield but left the front windows blank (at least they look that way). My Escort Max 360 works fine, keeps a strong connection with GPS, and displays speed real time continuously (based on GPS info). I wonder if yours has something mine doesn't. HofstraJet
I had a long drive the other day and the radar detector finally locked onto GPS after about 30 minutes, so something is causing an issue. I normally have it on a BlendMount under the rear view mirror and moved it to an open space in the windshield to eliminate any possible interference from all the stuff above the mirror, but same issue. I know the 9500ix has a weak GPS receiver so that, combined with whatever is on the windshield, is likely causing the issue. Toll tag continues to not work and I continue to be billed based on my license plate.
ajcomputer
Do you have the heads up display? There was a message released a couple days ago staying that there is supposed to be some hash marks near the rear view mirror that the toll transponder should be in.
HofstraJet
I do have the heads-up display. I don't see any hash marks. Just some frit dots next to the block behind the mirror, but transponder doesn't work there either. SunPass is sending me an external transponder - now I need to find somewhere to hide it. Don't want it ruining the beautiful lines on the vehicle. EDIT: Here's the message sent to dealers: http://mdev.fordtechservice.dealerconnection.com/Oasis/BroadCastMessages(accessed on 2/8/18) 2/5/2018 5952 - 2017-2018 Lincoln Continental/Navigator - Advanced Heads-Up Display (AHUD) - Highway Toll Responder No Signal/Poor Performance. Some 2017-2018 Lincoln Continental and Navigator vehicles may experience a concern with poor reception of highway toll transponders if the vehicle is equipped with AHUD. If this condition occurs, make sure that the location of the transponder on the windshield is within the hash marked sunscreen area of the windshieldand against the rearview mirror mount trim. Positioning of a transponder outside the hash marked area of the windshield will degrade reception. TLew
Had it happen to me finally (the radar detector, not the toll tag). It was a cloudy day and the speed would not readout on the front of the detector. Interestingly enough, it still warned me about red light cameras without my phone being connected. That leads me to believe that it's still getting a GPS signal but not a strong enough one.
NYGFan1
I have a 2018 Navigator with HUD and Im having an issue with toll transponder being picked up?!?! Currently it is mounted to the right of the rear view mirror. Any suggestions? I do not see any hash marks as commented on in this thread. A pic may be helpful if someone can help! HofstraJet
I don't know what hash marks they are referring to, either. All I see is the frit to the left of center and my transponder didn't work there. That said, I gave up and got the external transponder. It is HUGE! Something like this: Since I don't have a front plate, I was looking for somewhere clever to place it. Can't be in the cabin and can't be under the hood. I wanted to put it behind the front grille, but I found no easy way to access that area from either top or bottom. I found that right under the windshield wipers, there is a sort of basket where the lid to the basket easily opens up as it is held closed by some clips which just snap open. I was able to put it in there and zip tie it to the holes in the lid. Been working fine for a month or so now. It is meant to go on the front license plate, so not worried about weather exposure. NYGFan1
Has anyone found a way to mount the transponder inside the windshield for a Navigator with HUD. If so can you send a pic?!?! I've tried various locations without success and don't want to get the license plate one cause it messes with the beauty of the front of the vehicle. LHB
Owners manual 2nd printing page 104 shows to position Toll Tag to the driver side of rear view mirror .... I do not (as yet) know if it works (My dealer Tech Guy says he is unaware of any issues and to mount on passenger side of mirror; so we have conflicting indications. I tried it to the left (on and off the frits) and on the right. Neither worked. My solution is listed above. Please keep in mind this is for windshields with the HUD, so it's not all Navs. Edited April 10, 2018 by HofstraJet
LHB
Unfortunately NTTA, according to my conversation with them yeasterday no longer has external toll tags; only the inside stick-on. Edited April 13, 2018 by LHB
LHB
https://www.sunpass.com/specialWindshields Indicates “TOP, LEFT OF REAR-VIEW MIRROR” which seems consistent with page 104 of the Owners Manual (2nd printing).
TLew
Unfortunately NTTA, according to my conversation with them yeasterday no longer has external toll tags; only the inside stick-on. Just found this out as well. My toll tag has stopped being read and NTTA said they can send another toll tag. Alternatively, they said that if ZipCash pulls on my license plate it will pull from the account at toll tag rates and not zip cash. I won't hold my breath on it working as described, but we'll see. What color is your ride? Wave if you see a white BL up in Frisco

I have kept on NTTA for several reasons like NTTA doesn't charge for tags and you get right through when you call their customer service. Unfortunately I doubt billing can be made from license plates to toll tag accounts when the tolling authority is different from the toll tag. In this area there are several tolling authorities. If I can't get NTTA tags to work I'm thinking I'll have cancel my NTTA account and get an HCTRA License Plate tag (UGH!).
HofstraJet
Current manual https://www.sunpass.com/specialWindshieldsIndicates “TOP, LEFT OF REAR-VIEW MIRROR” which seems consistent with page 104 of the Owners Manual (2nd printing). FWIW, that didn't work for me with the SunPass portable transponder. Interested to hear if others get it to work there. LHB
I have tried 2 different NTTA toll tags. I have taped them to the windshield in all the recommended locations { (owners manual) left of camera module above mirror, (dealer) right of mirror, (NTTA) under mirror mount } as well as holding out the open sunroof and holding it out the driver window. Have been testing on Houstons Grand Parkway on NW side of town. Haven't worked and when I call TxTAG (who handles the west/nwest Grand Pkwy) they have not shown any violations by my license numbers and some of these now date back 2 months. On May 24 I had an opportunity to go through a toll gantry on Beltway 8, no billing to my NTTA account after several hours so had given up on that test and was checking the HCTRA web site (which has a place to check your license number for toll violations) daily but then on June 1 that charge appeared on my NTTA account. I was hoping it had read the toll tag (taped to left of camera module) but I called NTTA on June 4 and found that it had been billed by license. The bad news was the tag didn't read; the good news was that apparently the tolling authorities share their databases and can bill on license plate across tolling authorities. - still trying to get a definite answer from Lincoln - Is there a place on their windshields for toll tags? - checking into a black vinyl patch to stick toll tag to then stick the patch on outside of windshield (product by a Tesla owner designed for Teslas). - considering a trip to Plano TX NTTA service center if they can assure me that they can resolve my issue (last conversation with NTTA indicated that she thought if I were to go into the Plano location they could test the tag and its locations to find a location on the windshield that works if possible and if they could't make it work they 'may' have a license plate tag they could provide.) But I want to talk to someone there to get some assurances before I schedule an appointment and plan a 4 hour drive (each way). Any other ideas, comments out there ???? ???? Dave_SF
My san francisco bay area FasTrak toll tag doesn't work with my 2018 navigator reserve (with hud). I just registered my plate and ignore the problem, though it would be nice if there was a way to make it work.
Mango
For 2018MY Navigator Install your EZ toll tag at the top of the windshield, above the rear view mirror just to the left of the black sensor cover (drivers side). There is a gap for one toll tag sensor. For 2019 Navigator there will be space for three tag sensors in this location
