Q2 results war: FORD vs GM

Recommended Posts

According to my analysis of the recent news and results, it is clear that Ford is kicking GM's behind.

General Motors not only lost to Ford in revenue, but also ended up deciding to shelf the CHEVROLET brand in two emerging markets — India and South Africa.

Meanwhile, Ford is relatively untouched by the American auto industry slowdown.

What do you guys think of this?? Will Ford continue to batter GM? Will GM make a comeback?

It's only going to get worse for GM with upcoming plant shutdowns and a bloated inventory.

Ford has Explorer and Navigator on the way which will help a lot but they're leaving a lot on the table with Focus and Fusion being left to rot on the vine and not having a really good B cuv. And they better not have any new huge recalls.

Ford also needs to increase their development spending to accelerate the new stuff.

GM also has the Opel hit on their numbers. Not sure when that'll be included with results.

They will also be losing the Opel revenue going forward as well. Looks like Ford will probably over take GM in revenue from this quarter forward, figure both sell about 1,000,000 units in the EU each so 250K and figure super conservative of 20K USD for each unit sold. That is 5 billion dollars a quarter that GM is without, and 20 billion a year and that is very conservative. GM's Full year 2016 Revenue was ~166B, Ford's was ~152B.

With regards to Both companies, it's their north American operations that are making nearly all the profit

so I don't think revenue is a good indicator of relative health - profit from North America is everything and

as we just saw in Q2, Ford came within $400 million of GM's after tax result. That is huge considering

how far behind GM Ford is with large Utility sales and utility sales n general.

Both companies need to watch their step in North America as buyers switch away from cars to utilities

and as the market seems to be easing back, controlling inventory will become a big issue.

GM is more advanced in China and Buick really sells well there but I wonder how much that actually adds

to GM's bottom line.(maybe the Chinese are taking too much of that profit)
