Mustangtiger
I am intending to get 3M Paint Protective film put on my new Mustang GT's hood front, fenders and bumper cover, and would like to do it as soon as possible after getting the car. I am told by the installer that you have to wait three months after painting before the film is applied, to allow the paint to cure/outgass. That begs the question of when the car is actually painted so I can start counting the days. Does anyone have any idea, and, has anyone else put this film on their brand new car before? theoldwizard
Paint is applied as soon as the body is assembled. It is "baked" on and "touched" by many assemblers along the line. I am pretty certain that all US automotive paint is "water" based.
akirby
That should not be necessary on modern vehicles. 3Ms instructions only refer to freshly re-painted vehicles - no mention of OEM paint jobs.
Mustangtiger
Akirby, you are right! I just called the installer, and the three months is only for repair paint. Thank you!
Bfarm29
Pretty sure that the paint is one of the first things they do. Its painted before its assembled.
