2018 F-150 Revealed

Recommended Posts

Okay, I am getting conflict information. ot at least information that does not "smell" correct.

  • The 3.3L is the naturally aspired little brother of the "new for 2015" 3.5L. One report said it had 12 injectors ?
  • Another report said the 5.0L was getting 16 injector and using Plasma Transferred Wire Arc (PTWA) thermal spray instead of iron liners ? Both statements sound suspicious.
  • One report called the 2.7L EB "all new". Refreshed, but "all new" ?

So what is the deal with DI on the 3.3L? I was under the impression from your comments that DI wasn't really worth in a Naturally aspirated engine?

The 3.3L has port AND DI. They called it PFDI on the slide I saw.

The 5.0L is the same...so 16 injectors. I haven't seen anything on PTWA though.

I don't know about 'all new' on the 2.7L, but it is getting the same treatment the 3.5L got for '17. In other words, it will have 12 injectors as well.

So, this means that outside of the diesel, all engines in the F150 will have port AND direct injection, regardless of whether they are boosted or N/A.

The one item I was hoping would change is adding LED lights as standard equipment. Still looks to be only Lariat and higher trims.

As much fleet/commercial business as Ford does w/this truck, you probably won't see that happen until it's mandated by the feds.

Also, isn't Lariat pretty much the lowest trim for which you have a decent set of options (essentially what XLT was 20 years ago?)

If you have WiFi hotspot, You would be able to download the app such as Sonos or Bose use for internet based radio.

Who's going to pay for the data from your celluar device?

We are a long ways off from 5G networks...but you still have to pay for that data somehow and ISPs offering Wifi Hotspots won't have enough coverage while your driving.

It's not really the wi-fi hotspot - it's the 4G LTE modem which comes with its own separate data plan. In that regard it's exactly the same as using your phone to stream pandora or spotify.

The upgrades to the 5.0 V8 should see its power and torque figures opening up a nice little gap on the GM 5.3...

It would be nice to think that those new figures are the mid point between GM's 5.3 and 6.2 truck engines

but maybe 410 HP / 420 lb ft is a little too much to hope for...still, raised compression and DI...

With 385 HP / 387 lb ft, the current engine is not far away form that.

The updated 3.5 only gained 10hp so I figure the 5.0 might get a similar change. But as close as it is to 400hp, I think it would be a little bit of a disappointment to not at least hit that number.

The specialists who told me that (10 years ago) have all retired. DI works well when you can run lean, which you can not do in the US !

Maybe they did not want to tool up a second manifold ?

Limited grille and those where the two bars thin out in the middle are working for me. Where's the mesh grile from the announcement?

Open mesh grill=FX4 package.

Yep... FX4 can be ordered on many different trim level so it may replace the standard grille for that trim level.

e.g. XLT FX4 will probably have the mesh grille but Platinum or Limited FX4 may keep the more expensive look [note: this is a guess, I don't actually know for sure]

The updated 3.5 only gained 10hp ...

The new 3.5L fixed a "problem" that the old one had. The old 3.5L had the water pump "buried" in the valley. If the pump started to fail it would add coolant to the pan. Too much or too long and that was the end of the main bearings.

Now most people who saw low coolant would want to know where the coolant was going, but there were enough that just topped it off and kept driving.

RWD configuration 3.5 and 3.7 have an external water pump. FWD has it behind front cover and timing chain driven. I was told because it wouldn't fit. Water pumps that leak should mostly leak out the weep holes instead of inside the engine. However, I have seen on FWD it happen when the pump bearing is shot and coolant enters the crankcase. Go back and watch the Mr Truck video near the beginning of this topic. At about 1:12 they show close-ups of each engine and the plaques at the base of each with a basic description. Might answer most of your questions. Looks to me like all 2018 F-150 gas engines will get low pressure port injection combined with high pressure direct injection. In other words, two injectors per cylinder.

As far as I know the only current V-8 with PTWA is the low volume 5.2L Voodoo.

I am giving away my age here but my first new vehicle was a 77 F-150 with the Free Wheeling package. It was a beautiful metallic jade green Flareside with white pinstriping. 351M with a NP435 4-speed and 4x4. Awesome truck.

.

We had a brand new 1978 F350 4X2 12' rack truck at my dads TV and Appliance shop with the 351M and granny gear four speed manual. That thing was a beast. It was metallic dark brown.
