07 Expedition EL vs 07 Suburban Head to Head Test

Recommended Posts

The Wall Street Journal has the first head-to-head test of the 07 Expedition EL vs the 07 Suburban.

The Overall Winner: Expedition EL - "sophisticated transmission and suspension make it more pleasant to drive"

Powertrain:

Ford's smooth V8 and six-speed gearbox delivered quiet power and near seemless shifting. Never labored on long hills.

The Suburban seems to labor at times when climbing long hills.

Mileage:

Sub 15/20 during test 17 mpg

Exp EL 14/20 during test 17 mpg

Verdict:

"The Chevy is a better looking vehicle, with a slicker exterior than the boxy Ford. But the Expedition EL has the overall edge because of its smoother ride, more modern transmission and easy folding third row seats"

Summary:

"Even after loading the Ford at 4AM and driving for 12 hours straight to Maine we didn't feel as tried as we did after a shorter stint in the Checy."

Yeah, this great news. Too bad the market's in a downturn and more people won't notice, but... it's a moral victory nonetheless. Kudos! :bandance:

Besides, it soulds like this is maybe what they should have had all along, instead of the Excursion. Hopefully the eco-dogs will back down a bit now.

Excursion- wasn't that the brainstorm of Jac the Knife?

Range, got the full link or do we need to subscribe?

Oh well, like silversvt said.... that old "warmed over" Ford is still a winner :happy feet:

Unfortunately, need a subscription for a link.

The article also commented on the poor fit and finish of the Suburban interior. "the leather-textured plastic pieces that line the doors feel hard and poorly finished - we were temtpted to take an emery board to a nasty edge on the rim of the storage compartment" For the Expy interior they praised the leather, and the comfort of the heated and cooled seats but thought the dash was too busy and mentioned the chrome rings around the air vents are actually plastic and not chrome (gasp!).

The article also mentioned the "clunky" third row seats of the Suburban and contrasted that to the easy fold flat at a touch of a button third row on the Expy.

I don't think anything will make that happen now.

? Last I heard there was a projected build order of around 100,000 between the Expi. and the Navi. How much profit do you think Ford will make on these vehicles? I heard at least $10,000 per unit.
