The blue oval's getting angular! As the all-new Ford Mondeo's launch draws ever closer, it's slowly shedding its disguise to reveal a pointed new approach.

This is the latest prototype caught out on test by Auto Express's top spy snappers, and it's whetted our appetite for things to come. With a virtually undisguised front end and uncovered side panels, it's clear the existing Mondeo's familiar nose has been replaced by a far more daring and aggressive face.

There's a longer overhang to meet latest pedestrian safety legislation, as well as a prominent, deep front air-dam, which reflects the shape of the chromed grille. Designers have also been more adventurous with the profile, and a crease now runs from the front wing to the rear lights.

This is complemented by a distinctive rise in the window line behind the C-pillar. The next Mondeo will be larger in every dimension as it takes on Volkswagen's latest Passat. As a result, occupants will get much more space in what promises to be both a well built and luxurious cabin.

The model is based on the same platform as the new Galaxy (driven on Page 40) and S-MAX, and will aim to be the keen driver's choice. We've been impressed by the sharp handling of the two MPVs, so expectations are high, while the 2.5-litre turbo five-cylinder powerplant from the Focus ST should provide plenty of muscle. As it develops 221bhp, the sporting flagship will offer sparkling performance, while a 2.2-litre diesel ST variant is also expected to remain in the line-up.

Prospective buyers on tighter budgets will have the option of lower-powered 1.8 and 2.0-litre petrol and derv motors. Prices are tipped to start from around £17,000. Full details of the Mondeo model range will be announced when the car is officially revealed at the Paris Motor Show this September. Right-hand-drive versions are set to go on sale in this country next year.
