I thought it was an interesting, well thought out commentary.

I thought the article was pretty biased, about what I would expect to read on the Huffington Post or the like. Mediocre? perhaps but compared to giving the far left loons absolute power in Washington, I'd take mediocre.

I did get a kick out of Obama's response to the Georgian invasion this week... "we need to get the UN security council involved" perhaps someone should tell Obama that Russia has veto power in the security council.

Perhaps, but it's none-the-less interesting considering MarketWatch is owned by DowJones, and isn't the Huffington Post. Damn, I don't think you McCain supporters can stand any criticism of your candidate.

I got a kick out of Obama's response, too. Still wouldn't vote for McCain if you paid me.

You wouldn't vote for McCain, but you will vote for someone who is endorsed Hamas, Louis Farakan, Fidel Castro and the communist party of america? Makes sense to me, NOT!!!!!!!

Why anyone would vote for someone our enemies endorse is beyond me. When McCain gets Obama on the podium to debate the issues, "change and hope" better be backed up by some substance. My guess is it won't. I am not a huge fan of McCain either, but I am no where sold on the Obama glimmer. He is aboout socialism and wealth re-distrubution. What Idiot thinks that a windfall profits tax is going to do anything for us? It will put more money in the governments hands only so they can start another intitlement handout. Small government is what we need, these boneheads have never taken any program and turned it into something prosperous for the American people. God help us, if Obama gets in, your taxes will go up, you will be limited on the types of vehicles you drive, the things you do for fun, all because he thinks that the rest of the world pays 9 bucks a gallon for gas, so should we!!! And the rest of the world drives euro Focus's, so should we. Wake up, we are America, not the rest of the world! We didn't get to be the greatest country on the planet by being like everybody else, or by being liked by everybody else. Imagine if Henry Ford wasn't allowed to make as many cars as he wanted to, because the government decided that we should be buying the majority of our vehicles that were put on the market by countries who really don't have anything nice to say about us. Wonder why McCain can't get Obama on the stage for a good ole fashion debate, or even get a committment from him? It's because he knows that he will get his ass handed to him. If somebody wants to run on the idea that we can't handle 4 more years of Bush, my next question would be what will be done to change that. Be careful, the next 4 years under Obama could make the Bush 8 seem like a walk in the park

There is nothing interesting or well thought out about it. I especially like the part where it's McCains fault (implication) that he was shot down. Just a bit of a stretch there and pretty disrespectful. Since you already made the statement you would never vote for a republican please do not try to pass off an opinionated hatchet job as any form of objective reading. Obama's your guy and good luck to you and others but I will take McCain over a black Jimmy Carter any day. McCain does not have all the answers but Obama does not have a clue.

Cite your source, because most of what you claim has been disproved, and the only one that may not be disproved is a bit of a distortion. And that's being civil in my reply. Edited by Len_A

McCain can't get Obama on the stage for a debate? Obama's campaign agreed to three standard debates in the fall, sponsored by the Commission on Presidential Debates.

Better be careful about what you wish for. McCain does well in town-hall style debates, but it's not a given that he has the upper-hand in that style of debate. Obama is reputed to be an excellent public speaker, out debated every Democrat he ran against, and seems to be able to connect with people on an individual basis. A town hall style debate is going to have to allow supporters of both McCain and Obama, to submit questions, and McCain can be baited. He has demonstrated that he has a temper, and won't come across well in a televised debate. McCain has also shown that he can flub facts - while on a visit in Iraq, he mixed up Sunni and Shite Muslims, and Joe Liberman, traveling with McCain, had to correct McCain, on camera. Between that occasional misstating of facts, and his occasional flash of temper, he could tank a town hall style debate just as easily as do well in that kind of debate.

You seriously need a drink, or to just calm down. I thought the part about McCain about McCain's being shot down was light compared to other things out there. McCain was involved in five situation where the Navy lost a plane. One not mentioned in that editorial involved a fire on the USS Forrestal which killed 134 sailors. One web site tries to put the blame on McCain's shoulders, but an examination of the facts proves so much of what they post is bullshit it's not funny. And while I'm not going to blame McCain for his being shot down, as a lot of good pilots were shot down, a Freedom of Information Act request for McCain's Navy record shows that a lot of instructors didn't think highly of his skills as a pilot, and some put in his record that had it not been for McCain's father being a four star, McCain's career as a Navy pilot would have been over well before he got to Vietnam.

Obama doesn't have a clue? McCain has admitted that economics isn't his strong suit. Like it or not, this is the choices we've got this election - tweedle dee or tweedle dumb. You vote your way, I'll vote mine, but I'll be damned if I won't post something about McCain because his supporters might get their noses bent out of joint over it.

I agree that is an interesting article but I am not an Obama fan either. This is the tuffest election in the history of our country. We got the shaft the last two elections and it looks like we will get it again.

Yea, it's amazing the kind of choices we get every election. What makes me laugh is how passionately people will latch on to one candidate, and the kind of kindergarten level muck they try to swing at the other candidate, and in this case, since Obama is, admittedly light on background to find dirt in, they come up with some of the most blatantly ignorant, uneducated, low class innuendo and outright garbage, it's not even funny. I watched, during the Ohio Democratic Primary or caucus, which ever it was, CBS's Steve Kroft interviewing a small group of voters, and one guy expressing his concern about Obama, over Clinton, repeat something as fact that was both disproved repeatedly, and also denounced by McCain personally. And when this was pointed out by Steve Kroft to be a falsehood, this gentleman remarks "Well, that's what I heard."

Christ-on-a-crutch, how about doing some objective research on your own, and discount any of the blatantly bigoted, partisan garbage that floats out there on the Internet and gets forwarded in emails over and over again. Damn, how hard can it be to recognize the whack jobs on both sides?

Two Candidates.

Pick one:

Candidate A: Middle-aged. Studied overseas. Attended two different colleges in the U.S. before getting a degree. Went on to get a law degree. Worked community affairs in his adopted home city. Was elected to local office. Served in local politics for just over six years. Got elected to a federal state-wide office. Has one real year of experience in that job.

Candidate B: Middle-aged. Went to college and got a degree. Served in the National Guard for six years. Became a sergeant. While in the National Guard, earned a law degree. Became an investigator for a consumer-protection division. Was elected to a federal office. Was re-elected to a federal office. Was elected to a federal statewide office. Was re-elected to a federal state-wide office. Served in the executive branch for four years.

You want to talk about wealth re-distribution? Huh? Huh?!!?? 'Cause just take a look at what's happened in this country in the 28 years since Reagan took office, made a brief back-tick during Clinton's last 2 years, then resumed again with a vengeance under Bush II: the complete rape of the middle class and money grab by the elites (and by elite, I mean the top 1%). Are you literate enough to look up census, Congressional Budget office, and OMB statistics about distribution of wealth trends over the last 28 years? You've got to be totally ignorant to even raise the subject of wealth re-distribution while supporting another 4 years of Republican administration. Go look up the numbers, then come back. You've got no no - absolutely no leg to stand on when it comes to talking about wealth re-distribution. That is a sore sore subject with me and with many others. Cry "class war" if you want. Class war has been going on for 28 years and we're pretty much fed up with it.

Most of them are illiterate, at least for all practical purposes. I never really understood how the conservative movement took off such as it did. It clearly is designed to favor the rich at the expense of the working class. About two months ago, while I was listening to NPR, they had a guest author, a cognitive scientist, who really framed the issue in a rather unique way, and frankly, it all started to make sense. Unfortunately, I have been so busy that any extracurricular reading has been on the backburner; however, I just ordered that book and some others and look forward to reading on my current vacation.

I think you're forgetting that there were Democrat majorities in the House and Senate during Reagan and Bush #1 and the back tick during Clinton was with a Republican Majority in both the House and Senate. The Executive Branch only has so much power and doesn't have control over the budget. There is still no line-item veto.... In order for the President to get what he wants, he has to approve pork-barrel spending budgets. The Bush 2 administration isn't a Conservative administration by any stretch of anyones imagination, and neither will McCains. But McCain is the lesser of two evils here... What Obama is proposing has never worked and never will. The Government is not the answer to all of our ills. The Government has proven time and time again that they can't manage or run anything efficiently. Do we actually want them running our health care? Please!!

The Government needs to stick to enforcing our Constitution, the laws, maintaining our infrastructure, and protecting its citizens. If we continue to hand over our liberties to these self-righteous, ego-maniacal, professional politicians... which is what we do everytime we decide that we want the Government to take care of us in one form or another from cradle to grave. We are born into this world entitled to nothing, and we leave with nothing.

Vote your conscience... but beware of what you're asking for.

My two cents...

All you need do to find out if all of this stuff works is LOOK what are pays the highest % in local taxes. Guess who it is, lololololol. CHICAGO ILL.

For those BRILLIANT prognosticators who want to point at how this and that doesn't work, lets look at YOUR solution. CHICAGO ILLINOIS!!!!!!

Tell everyone how the school kids are doing!!!!

Tell everyone how small crime is!!!!

Tell everyone how businesses are flocking to the city if they don't have taxbreaks, or not fleeing when they don't have them either.

What political party runs Chicago, tell us!!!! How well is the plan working? Is it anywhere near better than say, Tucson Arizona? How about Kansas City? What about Oklahoma City?

Chicago is one of the most CORRUPT citys in America, and yet the tried and true Democrats run it, lolol.

It is virtually laughable!!!!! Just look at the large citys that have instituted more taxes and control under Dems leadership, and tell all of us what you see. Here, let me help you with the correct words-------->ABJECT FAILURE!!!! And now, how dumb are we to let them DARE try and even debate the issue while holding a straight face?

Tell all of us what Chicagos direct cash shortfall is, and what % of total income that shows?!?!?! Los Angeles? New York? These are microcosims of YOUR BRILLIANT ideas in action. And guess what!!!!! They DO NOT FUND A MILITARY, so how can they be broke and in deficit, lololol!!!!!

It is not that I am here to proclaim that republican ideas are brilliant, but rather that the alternative is a mirror of big citys that are controlled by democrats. Look at what is going on as fare as tax rates in Chicago, if you don't like that Los Angeles, if you don't like that New York......a city in each region of this country run by DEMOCRATS. Look, then tell me their ideas work, lolololol. Where did the workers go in these citys? Why did the companys leave? Why is everyone who is left that works getting fleeced? Why is nobody coming back in? Are you going to move in to prove your point and pay more taxes, lololol. (this I gotta see)

You are being led down the primrose path by socialists who ideas are in force in these city showing they don't work, and you need to look into it NOW!!!!!!!!

My two cents...

I'm not forgetting that. And while I can agree with some of what you say regarding Pork Barrel spending (I think a lot of farm subsidies should go away for instance), the fact of the matter is that the "Reagan Revolution" was just that - a revolution. It dragged everybody to the right, Democrats included. Clinton was further to the right - more anti-labor, more pro free trade, than Nixon was. The prevailing orthodoxy for these 28 years has been anti-government, anti-tax, anti-regulation, and trickle-down. Well, deregulation and trickle-down (tax policies that favor the accumulation of capital with the idea that it will somehow be used to benefit the many) have resulted in an explosion of monopolies, a mass export of productive industry, the evisceration of the American middle class, and a polarization of wealth that is neither socially nor economically healthy in the long run. And is morally reprehensible. That is my point. I have spent some time in other countries (Japan and the UK), and I can tell you that government run health care is not the nightmare that your handlers would have you believe. On the contrary. We spend much much more per capita than any other country on healthcare, yet millions of us go without, and our life expectancy continues to slip in the rankings (43rd now out of 180-some countries, I think). There are some matters that only make sense as collective endeavors. There is no economic argument to be made for taking care of the sick and dying: they (which will eventually be each and every one of us) are unproductive, they have no future, they consume resources, they will pay anything to prolong life. Care of the sick and dying is strictly altruistic. The interests of capital and of the sick and dying and their families are in complete opposition to each other. To pretend otherwise is to be living in a fantasy world. It's time for us to pull our heads out of our butts and recognize that maybe Sweden, Norway, Japan - in fact the entire rest of the first world (I am beginning to question our continued membership) have a better approach to healthcare than Somalia does, and we should be emulating them instead.

IMO. But yes, vote your conscience. That we can agree on.

Very, very well said, and very true. It amazes me how members of a middle class, that has completely lost ground economically, can still be mouth pieces for a party that goes out of it's way to benefit the elites. I don't know if these guys crying "class war" is comical or just sad.

methos, the conservative movement took off by the expert use of emotionally charged topics, because the use of emotion easily overcomes rationality and logic. The book you linked to looks like it explains it real well.
