SUPERIOR TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) -- Hyundai Motor Co. said Friday the 2011 Sonata sedan will lead all midsize cars in fuel economy.

The Korean automaker expects the Sonata to get 35 mpg on the highway and 23 in the city. It will be equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission and a new direct-injection four cylinder engine.

Will that 1.6/2.0 Ecoboost in the Fusion raise the bar to 37 mpg or even higher?

what they meant to say is that the 2011 Sonata will lead the 2010 competitive set in MPG.

once they competition reveals their 2011 models, the Sonata wont be on top anymore.

Besides, dont the Prius and Fusion hybrid do much better in FE? Which is fair to copare as Hyundai is claiming "ALL" midsize sedans"

And then think what a 1.6/2.0 EB Hybrid would do for a Taurus.......

absolutely nothing.

its a big heavy car so a small engine like that would have the turbos spinning non-stop and it would constantly be revving at 3000+ rpm.

not to mention the complaints of lack of power.

people still piss and moan that the 3.0 in the FiveHundred/Freestyle was/is anemic.

I think you'd be wrong, the Ecoboost I4 in the Falcon has been very impressive from reports from jpd80...

I'm sure that the Ecoboost I4 are going to be more impressive then you think..both with power and MPG

so you think a 1.6 or 2.0 turbo in the Taurus will be more powerful in daily driving than the 3.0?

Maybe they net out the same. But remember that the 3.0 was panned by most of the armchair CEOs here as being too weak and that the 3.5 couldn't get here soon enough.

So do you really think that a turbo 4 putting out the same power as the 3.0 will be sufficient?

And for a 2.0 turbo to get THAT much power would mean high rpms and frequently spinning turbo.

Which would give it MPG no better than the 3.0 in such a heavy car.

Look at truck engines. 4.9 and 4.2 V6s didnt return any better mileage than the 5.0 and 4.6s

I'm not so sure about that...

Gear ratio, lower weight would be a player in the I4 vs V6 topic.

yes, but the suggestion was to drop a 1.6 or 2.0 turbo into the Taurus.

cant lower the weight and changing the gear ratio would make it a dog on the highway.

Yes. I drove a 500 with the old 3.0 in it, and I did not find it underpowered at all. If the fuel economy is good enough, I would love to see a 2.0 EB Taurus.

I know the 3.0 had plenty of power but that was back when nothing was apparently as good as the chrysler 300 hemi.

FoA is working on the 2.0 EB Falcon - similar size and weight as Taurus.

Two mules at present, both keep up well with 4.0 I-6 and fuel consumption

is said to be similar to 4-speed auto Focus.

I said 1.6/2.0 Ecoboost Hybrid.

The Fusion Hybrid with a NA 2.5 works just as well as a good V6 car,

I haven't any reason to doubt that an I-4 Ecoboost Hybrid will be even better.

It's not a suggestion, an EB 2.0 in the Taurus and Falcon is happening.

Taurus and Falcon both lose close to 200 lb when EB I-4 is fitted.

In the Ford parallel universe I'd expect Taurus EB will lead the EB Falcon which arrives January 2011.

So you won't have to wait too long.....

I think I will.

I dont see how we can have a new 4 pot in 2011 that will keep up to the 3.5 (which is very new) in power while using much less fuel AND have the same engine life when used in the Taurus.

The 3.0 in the 500 was more than adequate for the mass market. It performed at least as well or better than the best selling cars of the time - 4 cylinder Camrys and Accords. The problem was there was no optional engine to to please the enthusiast rags to step up to. The reason it did poorly was that it didn't really offer anything style or feature wise to set it apart and Ford didn't have the "quality and value" reputation to get by without them.

I think it was reported a few months ago that the 2.0 EB would make somewhere around 260hp. I belive it was given in an article about the EB for the Falon. It was compared to GMs 3.0 DI V6. The EB made a few less hp (~10), but made more torque. I would think 260 (or even a bit less) with big broad EB powerband would feel fine for the typical buyer. Considering how many times I am sitting behind people merging onto the freeway at 40mph, more hp would just go to waste anyway.
