Toyota Doesn't Make the Safety Cut

What has changed is that the IIHS now includes a roof crush test in its criteria for the Top Safety Pick award. It has so far tested only small SUVs, subcompact cars, and midsize sedans by class -- any other car that wanted to get the award had to donate a test vehicle to the IIHS. Toyota didn't give the IIHS 11 cars (its winners last year) for the new tests, so didn't win.

That's certainly not to say that those cars would have aced the test if they had been tested, of course. Probably many would not. But it's just an unknown until the IIHS works its way through more market classes.

Also keep in mind, the Camry for an example, it's platform dates back to 1992...back then, there was very minimal roof standards required for vehicles. All they can do is add higher tensile steel if they wish to continue to recycle their platform. Nip tuck, Nip tuck can only last so many years...
