aneekr
LINK Ford and Ford affiliated products in the running are the 2010 Fusion, Taurus, Mustang, and Mazda3. The magazine states the Mustang "in some versions is simply stunning." Winner will be announced tomorrow. Harley Lover
MT Car of the Year = highest advertising revenue source. Perhaps the least regarded award of all. (not meant as a shot at you, aneekr, you're just reporting the news)
Captainp4
I'm going to guess on it being the Taurus. No particular reason or evidence, just have a feeling it might be it.

FoMoCobra
I'm a big fan of Motor Trend and have been a subscriber since 91. I really enjoy the Car Of The Year issue and I think the winner will be one of the following: Suzuki Kizachi - Retarded name but a fairly impressive car Mercedes Benz E-Class - Very impressive car with very advanced features Ford Taurus - Game changer in many ways. Has the makings of a Motor Trend COTY winner Chevrolet Camaro - Big Bang for the Buck Buick LaCrosse - It doesn't resembe anything GM has ever made. My guess for the winner: Ford Taurus SHO
goinbroke2
I hate C&D and motortrend and all the other "driving glove" rags. I like hotrod, carcraft, streetrodder, etc Yes I get dirty and work on my own vehicles, no I don't wear driving gloves (unless you include leather work gloves sometimes LOL) I have an AM radio I have manual windows My truck has many dents/scratches from work...and no I will not fix them. People complain because the screw heads are visible on their consols? Whatever.

atomcat68
I say they'll pick the Camaro. Although, when I drove the new Taurus, I was blown away. I can't imagine the car magazine couldn't be impressed with this new car.

I love the camaro's exterior, interior needs an update fast! however, i think the Taurus should take, this car really is the game changer at least for Full size cars. Kev-Mo
While most reviewers liked it, I don't recall anyone calling the new Taurus a world beater. Can't see it being selected over all the foreign nameplates listed here. Hyundai and Subaru are the new darlings - So I am predicting one of them If not I would have to say they will pick one of the super expensive Euro brands that nobody can actually afford. It is much easier for expensive cars to sweat the details than affordable cars. If an American car wins - it will most certainly be the Camaro. The Camaro has lost the last dozen or so comparison tests to just the Mustang. It takes more than an engine to win these things, nowadays. I'm figuring you might be right about the media darlings in the import circle, but the Taurus is bringing a big game. I really hope Ford's positive press lately starts making THEM the media darling. Imagine if Ford had included the new powertrains in the Mustang for 2010... Question: Will just new powertrain updates be considered enough to be a "new model" for next year's shootout? ANTAUS
I think it'll be the Camaro only because of the pent up, "oh its coming" BS for so many years, its the one getting alot of attention. It might not be the best selling, or the better executed one from those listed, but its the one thats getting attention overall. And most of it deals with "oh how did it get there, how was it built" blah blah. We already know what makes a Mustang and a mid cycle redo isnt doesnt usually make them receive an award from MT...MT likes to see an ALL new vehicle. I would like to see the Taurus win and I think more will be interested in that as consumer goes, but the Camaro will be the wet-dream that many men can't have but will lust for, so thats what they'll choose. Mark B. Morrow
I guessing it will be the Taurus. 1. It is a significant car, much more so than Camaro and appeals to a much larger section of the marketplace. 2. Camaro has consistently lost in head to head comparisons against Mustang (which is a refresh of a 5 year old car) and after the Looooong rollout it isn't "new" anymore. 3. The Buick is nice but not a winner compaerd to Taurus. The only drawback for Ford may be the splitting of votes across Taurus, Mustang and Fusion. mustang84isu
I'm going to go with the Fusion. It has become one of the ten best selling vehicles, and it is the most fuel efficient midsize with a 41 mpg hybrid variant and a 263 hp performance version. It is one of the most reliable vehicles on the road according to numerous sources. It has one-upped the defacto Camry in all areas. The Taurus is a great car, but it is too big for most people and hasn't really done anything earth-shattering. I see the Fusion, Mustang, or Camaro getting COTY before the Taurus. When I first saw the LaCrosse in pictures, I liked it and was impressed. But now that I see it on road, it disappoints more everytime I see it. For example, the rear of the Taurus is very impressive along with the two piece bumper which breaks up nicely that big hunk of plastic. But the LaCrosse assaults you with that big one piece wrap around bumper that looks like something out of the 90's. The side view with the ultra slitty window openings and super high belt line are not appealing to me. The Taurus side view is much more toned down and looks way more American and not like clone Lexus like with the LaCrosse. That Taurus looks like a Ford and very American while the LaCrosse looks like decent copy of a Japanese luxury vehicle, but no more. Taurus winds hands down. The Taurus SHO is a complete car that is super fast and hauls five in comfort along with huge trunk. The Camaro is a one dimesional sport coupe with a horrible interior and in no way even comes close to the Taurus SHO. That being said, I don't think much of MT and haven't for a long time. In my mind, I don't think they have much relevance anymore and personally I don't care who they pick for award. I never read MT anymore, even in the library. Not worth my time. Moosetang
Mustang's unfortunately unlikely to win. Even with the 5L, journalists are hung up enough on the SRA that they'll completely overlook how it outperforms Camaro's lead-heavy arse or how it's still the best bang for the buck Ponycar. Glass Half Full: The problem with predicting MT is that their criteria never seem to be the same year-to-year. Sometimes the most fun car wins, sometimes the most practical, sometimes the greenest, etc etc. If the Z4, Camaro, and Genesis Coupe split the Fun To Drive camp, and no crazy outlier like the Cube gets it just to be "edgy," I think Fusion is fun, green, and practical enough to walk away with the Calipers. Ford should also have an emotional Edge, being the only Domestic to bypass bailout + bankruptcy. Glass Half Empty: It's a sham contest and it goes to the car which will sell the most magazines from the cover. Camaro will win, and they'll help justify it despite the Coffin-like outward visibility and pig-like handling by saying it shows that GM "is back on its feet." rmc523
Just thought I'd mention that Ford is advertising the Taurus on USA's new show "White Collar." A new Taurus is used by the main FBI agent.
timmm55
Like a big buget Hollywood movie, Ford has been advertising the heck out of it's new cars. Translation: Motor Trend (and the others) listens to money. And Ford is paying. A worthy car (SHO) plus advertising revenue = COTY.
F250
Remember a few Motor Trend Car of the Year winners... 1971 Chevy Vega 1974 Mustang II, the first Mustang to ever win and the only one without an available V8 1976 Dodge Aspen and Plymouth Volare 1980 Chevy Citation, GMs recall record holder 1982 Chevy Camaro, recognized by even Chevy fans as a crossfire failure 1983 AMC/Renault Alliance Sometimes they pick good cars like the '67 Cougar, '68 GTO, '69 Road Runner, '70 Torino, '86 Taurus, '87 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe, '94 Mustang. The year (1979) the long running Fox Mustang was introduced they picked the front wheel drive Buick Riveria.
