Analysts and dealers suggest that the most likely replacement would come from Ford's full-size car platform which is the same platform that is used for the 2010 Ford Taurus and Lincoln MKS full-size sedans.

:party2:

A new vehicle purposefully built for Police duty on an existing platform.

Now, who on this board thought that would have been the best route to go, instead of ruining perception on a public sale vehicle with police fleets.

C'mon. You can say it. ;)

Let's speculate, will it be a RWD car based on the current AU Falcon, an all new car based on GRWD, an all new car based on D4? Maybe they'll take the last gen Taurus and make it police ready. I'm hoping for a RWD car for selfish reasons.

My gut feeling on this leans more towards a RWD car based on the AU Falcon or a revised new car based on GRWD.

The term "Purpose Built" seems to hint that Ford will not be using a modified Taurus platform.... IMO

The linked article says the reveal will be Q1 2010. Does that suggest it will be revealed at one of the auto shows? Maybe NYC? Or Chicago?

Since we're speculating, how about this: RWD & based off of the Falcon. Kind of like the Caprice is purpose-built for police. My guess: it won't be available to consumers just like the Caprice also.

I'm thinking the general idea is "purpose built" means different skin and probably other "heavy duty" tweaks. Probably use an existing interior though. Which frame option to begin with is the question.

Personally, I think if it is a car based concept, (ie not Explorer), it should still have AWD as an option. I see a lot of Tahoe's and Expi's in North Dakota that are on LEO duty that probably aren't needed all the time if AWD was an option. Some still would be needed because we are a rural state. So the Highway Patrol might do a little "off main road" work. But our city police sure don't. AWD would cut the bill just fine and be cheaper to run, hopefully.

Another article (Detroit News). Note the part that says "engineered and built in America."

Not a version of an existing vehicle, but it could be a version of a past vehicle. That's one reason I'm thinking that it may be an updated version of the last gen Taurus/Five Hundred. It really makes the most sense as they invested quite a bit in the updates for the 08. It had a huge interior & trunk & is based on a very safe & sturdy chassis. If they update it, give it an optional EcoBoost, it really would make a pretty good PI. And it would not be a "version" of an existing vehicle. Just a thought...

Probably built in Chicago.

Taurus, MkS, Explorer, Police Interceptor. Should put the plant up to capacity.

Anybody remember a few months ago when Farley said a RWD crossover could be the new police interceptor? And what is Fords only rwd crossover?

+it is not a current vehicle sold in the US so it can be it.

Probably not GRWD, that's not something you could just throw a switch on and have ready in a year.

"Engineered and Built in America" likely rules out Falcon. I don't see how they could possibly set up a Falcon line in the US right now, and certainly not in a year.

D4 in some form would be the obvious conclusion. Existing lines, etc etc. There's some unlikely possibilities like a quickie-stretched D2C or return of the DEW, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

I'm betting a police version of the new Explorer, or of the Taurus.

Either way, saying it is "designed' in North America is quite a stretch.

Purpose Built certainly could mean a heavily modified Taurus. Remember that Ford had been pushing the Taurus on the departments as the successor to the CVPI. And "All New" is a BS phrase in the auto-industry, it's applied to things like the 2010 Ford Fusion. And if they call it the Ford PI, what do they call the Taxi model? Aren't Taxis going to hybrids in New York? In either case, I would be surprised if we see Ford doing what GM has done, importing from Australia. I'm fairly certain we are looking at a home product that may be ported to Australia if they are interested (Australian Fords are irrelevant to Dearborn for the most part, it's a small market with a micro-budget and insignificant profits for cars that are complety unusable in this market).

In any case, the car has to be much more fuel efficient than the current CVPI or it will be a wasted effort.

Ford may also be concerned by the loss of Town Car as a fleet queen so they may be working on a successor in conjunction.

This also FINALLY gives the execution date of the Panther car.

Hey, if they can make money off it, go for it. Just not sure how much money is to be made on such an endeavor.

I'm with Borg on this: heavily modded version of current Taurus. The old Taurus/Five Hundred dies are long gone, as are the molds for the interior parts--it's not going to be that, IMO.
