Ford needs a premium luxury car to compete with the Europeans (BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and others)

The Ford Laramie will be the European's worst nightmare, because it will be aimed at BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi and other European Luxury cars. It could be based on the Expedition L paltform but in a extended chassis of the Taurus. The Ford Laramie would compete with the BMW 7-series, Mercedes-Benz S-Class, Audi A8 and other European Luxury cars.

Plz comment if you like the idea.

If any such vehicle was going to exist, it would exist under the Lincoln banner.

Not really sure where you are going with the combination of Expedition and Taurus bits either.

I think the best we can hope for in regards to something similar to what you're wanting is to see the Global Rear Wheel Drive architecture come to life and spawn a proper Lincoln RWD luxury sedan.

Exactly. I predict that will happen but not until the other more urgent priorities are taken care of like the Fiesta and new Explorer.

Yeah, I don't understand what that Expedition/Taurus thing was about, either.

And you can't call it "Laramie," as that's a Dodge, 'scuse me, Ram, trim level.

Ok true but its just thought i had to make American auto makers one of the best in world. Why would the car be under the Lincoln badge instead of the Ford badge. Ford should compete with the European auto makers not Lincoln, just saying

On the contrary, why would you put a full-fledged luxury product aimed at BMW & Friends under the Ford banner? I disagree that Ford should compete with them.

Lincoln needs a real flagship RWD sedan. AWD can be optional.

A 5.75L v10 based on the 4.6, with direct injection.

Ford should compete with the European automakers...like Volkswagen, Fiat, Opel, Skoda, etc. Lincoln should be positioned to eventually expand more broadly overseas to compete with the other brands you mentioned.

How much longer will the wait be?

Lincoln is nothing but a overweight Ford right now with a THX stereo. :shades: And it cost 30% more than the Ford it is based on.

I can not think of any product that Lincoln has that I want vs a Ford.

At least the 98 Continental that I owned (and liked) had better seats, better engine, more room than the Taurus. And the LS use to be in the same ballpark as the 3-Series.

A Lincoln isn't about performance, Lincoln isn't a real luxurious car, nor is it a real good looking car. Lincoln is nothing more than a above average car with a much above average price.

At least Cadillac is making an attempt with the CTS.

Don't you think it's more important for Ford to get the Fiesta, new Focus, new Explorer and new engines out the door first? Priorities. If they don't fix the core brand now they won't be in business long enough to fix Lincoln. Ford first, then Lincoln. And then Mercury if they can figure out a reason to keep it.

actually/imho

Not that much longer!... ...I expect between the new C3 launch and that of the merged Eucd+CD# platform, Lincoln could well be on its way to globalization

of course I'd prefer they start with a global C3 Mercury CAPRI cabrio-hard'vert :D

Opinion, opinion, opinion, opinion.

Lincoln is persuing the exact same path that got Lexus where it is today. It's going to take one step at a time, but they are on the right track. Vehicles like the LS on their expensive platforms were dead-end ideas from the start. I'd take an MKZ in terms of "luxury" over an LS and its cheap plastic interior any day.

As for Cadillac...yeah...those billions have been well-spent I'll tell ya. They have the CTS to show for it. What else again? Oh that's right. The rest of their lineup is either 1) floundering or 2) rebadges with slightly better interiors and stereos than their Chevy counterparts.

I may be wrong, but I thought the first Lexus LS was on a platform not shared with Toyota. As such, that is not the same road Lincoln is taking.

And you are saying that you would rather have a MKZ vs a LS. :shades:

The CTS platform has a wagon, soon to be coup and the CTS-V.

Lincoln is short on all three. A MKZ 3.5 EB AWD would be close however...

I don't know why you post a picture of a Lexus LS when YOU brought up the original LINCOLN LS and compared it to a 3-series, THAT'S the LS Nick was referring to.

And The CTS wagon and coupe are/will be ugly. I just saw a CTS wagon on the road today, actually - didn't like it at all.

Lexus is Toyota outside of North America.

I could be wrong but I thought I read that the LS was built on the Century platform.

Ford is a good value car company.

But it has major gaps for it to be considered a performance or performance luxury car company like BMW. M-B Audi. Even Cadillac and Chevy have cars that are a empty void in the Ford lineup. Lincoln should have a CTS-V and Ford should have a Corvette halo cars.

I find it disappointing that Germany is able to support so many car companies and three high line companies and the USA can only support value car companies.

It would be nice to see the Mercury, Lincoln, Cadillac and Buick produce products that would compete with BMW, M-B, Audi, Aston Martin, Jag...etc.

Take a look at all of the cars and engines that BMW, M-B and Audi have to offer. Then compare what GM and Ford have in the same segment. :banghead:

imho, the CTS, as much as I like it, isn't close enough to perfect to be a role model -- specifically it's size. Imho it should be smaller to truly challenge the 3-series or a skosh bigger (inside!)

so

I hope Lincoln gets 2 GRwdP models to do just that^

I hope Lincoln will rank higher than those guys in quality and 'effective-luxury' (they already beat them in reliability imho) but never completely lose a touch of "best value" in their price structure - ie under $100k in today's dollars -- I want Lincoln to make 'those guys' look LUDICROU$$$$$$.$$

((and of course I want MERCURY to OBLITERATE All the entry-lux/premium brands!!!))

I went to visit family in Germany/Austria several years ago. I was shocked to see Mercedes Benz being used as standard (not limo) taxis. When I asked my family about it, they explained that MB is a full range car company in Europe, where as in America only the top line products get sold here. It is a matter of careful product placement & damn good marketing.

So for Ford to do likewise it would sell the Lincolns in Europe and keep the Fords here. Of course, imported Mustangs would still find a home in Europe (maybe ordered from Lincoln dealers?).

The next gen MKZ would do well in Europe? The MKS & MKT might be too large for a common luxury vehicle in Europe.

And, sadly, there is no Thunderbird/ Mark X to use for a "small personal luxury" class vehicle.

Mustangs can't be sold in Europe in mass. To be sold in Europe a car's rear turn signals must be amber. That means giving up the sequential reds we love so much.

I would like to see Lincoln make a sports car. Maybe a 911 killer would be a better choice than a CTS killer. Something mid-engine(a modified version of the Ford GT chassis may be in order), Ecoboost 3.7L engine, 6 speed trans, with a boxy facia for $65-80K may get Lincoln some needed press.
