So, can a rubber mat be placed in the cargo area (above the battery)? I have always liked having all weather protection in the cargo area but I do not want to hurt the battery. Thanks. The battery pack has its own heating and cooling system built into it. Thats what the vent on the left rear quarter glass is for. The pack contains two fans internaly. Also, there is a heater core and a/c evaporator. All that stuff is automaticaly controled. Putting a cargo liner will not have any adverse affects. The only thing you need to make sure of is not to let alot of liquid spill on top of the battery or put a ton of weight on top. The rubber mat will help keep any spills off. I don't know the exact specs for acceptable weight on the battery top. I will look around and see if I can find it. I recently bought a 06 Mariner hybrid myself. I have had the battery pack out of a few FEH and had them apart. They do have a steel top, but I am just not sure that I personally would put more than a few hundred pounds on top of it. Atleast the weight in the picture is evenly distributed. I have been a hybrid certified tech for several years, but I only work on about ten or so around here. Some FEH owner's brag about towing 3500 lbs. They don't even believe the lesser maximum in the owner's manual! I think that we all know the FEH can tow more than 1000lb or 1500lb 4x4 vs 4x2. The question is it a good idea. Its like saying, a Focus can tow 3500, but should it? Ford has been pretty cautious with the FEH. I think they are more concerned with prematurely wearing out components that are very costly. I bought my MMH to commute and save fuel not to tow and load 1000lbs in the back. Thats what my F150 is for. It may be completely safe to tow that much with the FEH, but as far as I am concerned, it really wasn't intended to do so. I would like to know the mechanical limits of the traction motor.
