Ford May End GM Streak as Top-Selling U.S. Automaker

Recommended Posts

July 10 (Bloomberg) -- Ford Motor Co., gaining ground on its distressed domestic competitors, may surpass General Motors Co. this year to become the top-selling automaker in the U.S. for the first time since 1931.

The new GM emerged from the remains of bankrupt General Motors Corp. today, aiming for 18.5 percent of U.S. auto sales with four car lines, down from eight. The four surviving brands, Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC, accounted for 16.5 percent of the market in June, according to Autodata Corp. Ford’s share was 17.2 percent, excluding Volvo, which it is selling.

Surpassing GM would validate Ford’s strategy to go it alone and spurn government aid. While GM and Chrysler LLC seek to change themselves through bankruptcy, Ford benefits from its status as the only independent major U.S. automaker as it builds momentum, said John Wolkonowicz, an industry analyst with IHS Global Insight of Lexington, Massachusetts.

“Ford is on a real roll right now,” Wolkonowicz said. “Ford could overtake GM this year.”

That makes me wonder, with the emergence of the the "new GM", how are they going to count sales of the "Bad GM" sales? I think someone posted that Ford already outsells the "new GM" already.....

Ford, GM and Chrysler - the good, the bad and the ugly.....

Yup, I did. With only Pontiac out of the mix, Ford outsells the Good GM. And thats not including Saturn, Saab, and Hummer.

And lets not forget Fords ace in the hole this year...the Transit Connect! :happy feet:

Spokespersons for both GM and Ford have said that profits are more important than sales crowns. Let's hope Ford maintains that laser focus and that sales crowns are more important to those in the media or on internet message boards. :shades:

Look out...here comes rmc's 'Laser Focus'! :hysterical:

Not to discredit Ford...but um...GM had as much if not more to do with ending GM's streak this year. :hysterical:

Not true but if u want to believe in fairy tales go ahead and believe them :finger::finger:

Fords lineup trumps GM in almost every vehicle category.

Mustang vs. Camaro= Ford

F150 vs. GM= Ford

Fusion vs. Malibu= Ford

Taurus vs. Impala= Ford

Big Van is Ford in a blowout

Edge vs. GM = Ford

Escape vs. GM's piece of crap== Escape

Explorer vs. Blazer==GM

Focus vs. Cobolt= GM but the new Focus is better

Fiesta vs. Aveo = not even close = Ford

Ford will be #1 for the many years to come :happy feet:

GM hasn't exactly given customers reasons to flock to it's dealers....

Yo Mark, I saw a tee shirt the other day that said "ON ICE OR GRASS, WE'LL KICK YOUR ASS - PITTSBURGH"

Go Steelers!!!

One of the women in my office has that shirt. Sadly it doesn't apply to grass in the shape of a Baseball Diamond. The Pirates are on pace to set the record for consecutive losing seasons this year at 17.

At least they're not as bad as the Washington Nationals....

Can the "new GM" actually count sales from the "old GM"? In other words, the new GM was just created this month, so sales from the first six months of this year are not really their sales. They belong to a company that no longer exists. What do you think?

It is an interesting question about how sales numbers will be handled. I don't think the "new" GM will have enough sales to retain it's crown, even though the brands it dropped weren't volume sellers.

It was from 2000.

Had some interesting concept-y features, but to look at it today, there's nothing earth-shattering about it at all.
