ausrutherford
Chinese automaker Geely has signed a letter of intent to purchase Volvo from Ford, a Chinese news site is reporting today. The report cites anonymous sources in the Chinese government and no official word has come from Volvo, Geely or Ford, nor has it been corroborated by other sources, lending doubt to its accuracy. According to the report, Ford and Geely are still working out many details of the agreement, including the transfer of technology, Volvo's marketing and market position and any layoffs that will stem from the sale. Volvo will reportedly move a production line to the Chinese city of Dongguan in the Guangdong Province. The report indicates that Geely has already gotten the OK from the city and has applied for land and a loan to build a new factory on, though big business deals in China require the approval of the federal government. No purchase price was reported. More here: http://wot.motortrend.com/6550590/industry...ford/index.html
jtstakelin
See i'm torn on this. Volvo has provided ford a platform, D3, and many other safety advancements. I think this might hurt ford in the end. But cash is king right now.

I think this might hurt ford in the end. But cash is king right now. Ford has caught up in safety now so i think its all good now. Besides the only reason why Nassar bought Volvo in the first place was to get his hands on the P2 platform anyway which is and was a stupid decision. ANTAUS
Geely will not improve Volvo, and for what it is, Ford raped Volvo of what is needed and hasn't done much to improve it, it's a sinking ship with decade old products like the S60, so fine, sell it to Geely, they wont do any better. Hmm, I would expect the sale of Volvo to follow much the same pattern as was done with J/LR. Hopefully, Ford has secured long term power train and engineering support contracts with Volvo (Geely), you may even find there's a lot of new product in the pipeline that Geely has agreed to fund. rmc523
If this is true, I guess Peter Horbury has finished his career with Ford (at least for now)? Edited June 18, 2009 by rmc523

You do realize in addition to platforms, safety tech, turbocharging technology and entire engines, Volvo also contributed to the development of Ecoboost (Twinforce), right? Plus hasn't this already been debunked as rumor and speculation?
mackinaw
Take a look at the article again. Volvo has issued an official response calling the report "speculative" and "inaccurate."
NickF1011
The media seems to be over-anxious to get the Chinese catapulted into the U.S. auto market. It'll happen soon enough anyway. We don't need this kind of sloppy journalism to encourage it.
Pioneer
Geely will not improve Volvo Geely doesn't care about improving Volvo. Geely wants Volvo's designs, technology, and expertise to design a Chinese car that can pass our crash tests.

Unfortunately for whoever ends up getting Volvo, much of that design, technology, and expertise is now Ford's proprietary property. Of course, even 1990's Volvo tech would be a vast improvement over the crap Geely is currently assembling.

With Volvo technology and reputation and chinese labor prices and manufacturing prices, GeelyVolvo will hurt ford in the end.. in my opinion this is the biggest mistake ford could make... I don't care if they sell volvo..but i do care if they sell it to the chinese..

I don't care if they sell volvo..but i do care if they sell it to the chinese.. Perhaps with a Ford-Geely-Volvo technology tie up, Geely could become Ford's platform redux, recycling older platforms that are crash worthy, platforms like C170 Focus and last generation Fiesta...... Pioneer
Hurt Ford how? It won't. It will hurt American workers when Ford is forced to move production to China and India to compete with the slave wages Geely pays it workers.

johnnyb82
Hurt Ford how? It may hurt Ford, but it will hurt Ford's competitors as well. The damage will be dispersed, unlike the money Ford would receive now.

Plus hasn't this already been debunked as rumor and speculation? Just FYI: Ford has been investing in turbocharging much longer than Volvo. Ford started playing with turbos in the mid/late '70s and was a nearly continuous seller of turbos from '79 to '89. EB is only their latest foray.
