President Obama plugs Ford's Escape Hybrid

Recommended Posts

President Barack Obama doesnt do much of his own driving these days, but the President recently traded in his Chrysler 300 on a Ford Escape Hybrid. Apparently President Obama greatly prefers his new ride to his old, giving the Escape Hybrid a ringing endorsement at today’s announcement on fuel economy standards.

After announcing the new 35.5 mpg standard on Tuesday, President Obama gave an offhand plug of his Escape Hybrid. “By the way, I just want to mention, I think I still have my Ford parked in Chicago,” Obama said. “It’s a Ford hybrid, it runs great, you guys should take a look.”

Ford CEO Alan Mulally was happy to hear the plug, but the other nine auto execs in attendance weren’t as thrilled. Quickly realizing his bias comment, President Obama added: “But there are also some outstanding hybrids and energy-independent cars represented up here, so I didn’t want to just advertise for one,” according to the Detroit Free Press.

I think he was just showing that it was probably a political buy, since his V8 RWD 300C wouldn't play too well with the 'save the planet' folks.

Oh.......I already knew that when we first heard he got the Escape.......nevermind.

Well he owes Ford a plug.

Last year at about this time, he trashed (IIRC) his '78 Ford Granada.

He sounds sensible, the '78 wasn't much to brag about. IIRC, the trash-talk was tongue in cheek then took the Escape.

I believe it came shortly after he took a dump on the D3 for making gas guzzlers instead of the fuel efficient cars that people really wanted.

Actually I was pointing out that, contrary to the quote, this did not happen "recently" -

it happened a long long long long time ago.

But the political end of things is probably true too :)

I love to hear anything big-Al says. He's amazing in that he's got the car business figured out and is making it work.

But I wish he'd stop overusing his two favorite words:

Laser

Focus

At least one's a car they make.

IIRC Ford used to make a Laser too in the AUS and far east market. I saw one in the U.S. back in the 1980s.

IIRC, the Ford Laser/Mazda 323/Mercury Tracer and last generation Capri were based on the same platform.

Laser Focus he he he.

Too funny! Had Ford only been building hybrids back when they were selling 400,000+ Explorers a year...
