FLex EcoBoost option to cost $6,000

Recommended Posts

I did some research and found that a 2010 EB MKS will cost 47,760 as opposed to $40,870 for a non-EB MKS.

A 2010 Taurus LTD is $31,995 and a SHO (EB) will cost 37,995

So it seems that a 2010 EB Flex will be about $36,000

Seems like you won't be able to build a$ 38,000 SEL Flex and then add on $700. You will have to buy a "Package" for about $6,000. I have seen pictures of the 2010 EB Flex and it has paddle shifters, just like the SHO and MKS.

I hope I am wrong.

I think you're probably right...for now. You can't just add the EB...you have the get the additional packages that go with it (AWD and other fancy required goodies).

Yeah, I was gonna say the EB technology itself may not be that whole $6000 price gap, it probably accounts for EB plus added features (like AWD as you said), and perhaps other features that are optional on non-EB powered models?

Fine by me - I was thinking of a loaded Flex anyway. I want LTD, Moonrof, Nav, etc. Pretty much all but the towing package and/or the refrig and DVD. The only way to buy cars is loaded - you get more enjoyment out of them over the time and get more at trade in.

So, you're OK with $50k for and EB Flex?

The EB option costs $700. I've already got the limited with the DVD headrests, refrigerator, Nav system, fancy glass roof, mac daddy wheels, and soft glo lights. The only thing I don't have is the AWD and the tow hitch. I figure teh AWD will run an extra 2K or so, plus the EB for $700.

If you can get an EB Flex to 50K even with every option and some accessories, I'll be surprised. Everything in the guide for 2009 Job 2 with the DVD headrests as a mod center option cost 46,200.

Next time I'll probably delete the 2nd row console all togother, or at least the fridge part.

I just went Ford in gaithersburg to look at the Flex, just took one look inside to determine this vehicle is not for me. Are they really getting rid of the Taurus X? That car suits my needs much better. I rented one a year ago and was really happy, at first I though the mpg was poor, but 19mpg the way I was driving was actually quite good.

I don't think the Flex has a long future, it gets the same mileage as Mini-vans that have much more room inside. I don't buy this thing looks better than say an Odyssey. About all the sales person could say was 268hp! my reply was "I've got two young kids, I need room not hp". Besides don't most mini-vans have about that much power now? I'm a Ford fan, but I feel like I have to be objective, looks like I'll be driving a Honda soon.

The wife and I test drove the Flex on Saturday (deciding between the 10 Flex or 10 SHO to replace my G35)

Not sure minivans have more room. Most seat 7 or 8 while the Flex does 7. And there really isn't much room behind the 3rd row in a minivan. About all they offer is space up behind the 3rd row for limited stuff. Fold down the 3rd and you have tons of room, same as if you removed the back seat of a minivan.

The room was great for us and I just wish it had more power (hence my waiting for Ecoboost).

I do see the Flex having a decent future - sales are picking up and have been increasing since it's introduction.

So, what did you think of the Flex ride quality and fit and finish? Please let us know how the SHO was.

Thanks.

Not wanting to bash the flex, I did some homework, I found most mini-vans have at least 16 cu ft more volume inside vs. the Flex. I will be using the vehicle I purchase to travel a lot, that extra 15 cu ft. is necessary. When I was in it the Flex seemed oddly narrow, perhaps because I normally drive an F150, I checked this out as well and in fact the flex has 5 in less first, 10 in less second and 10 less third. I suppose Ford isn't going for a family hauler with this anyway. I personally prefer sliding doors - especially the automated ones to the swing outs, my wife has actually made it a must have for at least one of the next vehicles.

Now that Ford has gotten concessions from Unions can't they make a Mini-Van up to par with Honda or Hyundai? I see alot of the old Ford Mini-vans around, they look nice.

I flat don't understand why people want more horsepower everything though, this is insane 268hp isn't enough in a people hauler? If this were a Mustang I'd understand, but it isn't.

When the direct injected TT engines come out I'd like to see a 4-cycl that is making what current v-6's are making placed in the Flex and with gas prices rumored to at least go above 3$ this summer I think this is what Ford will have to do if they don't want to see sales dry up, 24mph really isn't that good. Toyota's next gen engines are supposed to start coming out in 2010, I am sure they are going to up the ante across the board.

Loved it. Different than my G35 as was to be expected. But much better than my wife's Escape. It was dead quiet inside even on a stretch of concrete road that is noisy in both cars. We turned the radio off on the highway and both my wife and I noted how quiet it was - you could hardly hear the wind around the car.

The seats were awesome - we sat down and both said "WOW that's comfortable"

Fit and finish was great - about the same if not better than my G35. Then again I'm not a stickler for this sort of thing. Looked good with a tan interior (although I hate light color interiors) and everything seemed to be screwed together well.

We really liked the Flex, so much so that the wife doesn't want me to drive the SHO as she wants me to get the Flex. Let's just say if it were the Ecoboost Flex I'd probably be driving it now.

But I told the salesman to call me when they get some in as I'm interested in one or the other.

Got it but be careful they may be measuring volume as top to bottom, back to front. Which would make sense given that minivans are quite tall and the Flex is not. That may be where most of that volume is coming from. And it would make that not usable volume as it's above your head.

I see alot of the old Ford Mini-vans around, they look nice.

But from what I hear none were that reliable.

For me it's 3 reasons:

1) Hills - we have mountains/hills around here and it's nice to be able to pass in a decent amount of time.

2) Trucks - we have TONS of trucks around here as S. Central PA is a HUGE warehousing mecca for the east coast. It's nice to be able to pass one on a hill and not have to worry about it.

3) Driving feel - I like the kick in the pants you get.

Don't know about that. I drive a 1986 2.3L 4-cyl. Mustang for 5 years. In 1998 I bought a 1997 Mustang with the V8. Got pretty much exactly the same mileage with the V8 that I did with the 4-cyl. Why? Cause to keep up on the highway my foot was buried to keep the thing at 65-75. In the V8 I would barely touch the gas.

Anyway - good luck on your car/van/truck search!

Thanks for taking the time to respond. I really appreciated it, since one of the several new Ford products I am considering is an EB35 Flex.

This is a fair response, I've driven the current Taurus with the 268 hp v-6 and it's no slouch, I'd bet it'll get'er done on them hills. What would worry me about putting a 360 hp engine in the flex - will they put bigger brakes, and a firmer suspension on it so the extra hp can be handled? Most of the time this isn't done. Many a RAM - Hemi owner has found this out the hard way, bigger engine can get you into a lot of trouble fast!

I have the F-150 with a 5.4 my dad has one with a 4.6, he consistently gets above 20 mpg with his, I'll get 18-19 (I've done some modifications - headers, cat-back dual ex) on the highway, but around town 12-13 is the norm while he'll get 16-17.

In other words, "Since something changed 3 months ago, can't Ford instantly have the results of a product development that would require 3-5 years?"
