HID Install in 2010 Fusion Sport

One of the only minor shortfalls I found since last saturday when I picked up my sport was the night lighting. In order to "correct" that problem, I ordered a HID kit. My HID kit came saturday so I spent an hour doing the install. If your thinking of doing it, don't wait, there is a major difference in lighting. At night I can really see everything and with such a sharp cutoff on the headlights, nobody has flashed their highbeams at me. Firstly, don't follow the directions in the owners manual about getting access to the passanger side light, I have a much easier way. The driver side is a piece of cake.

Driver Side: Pop the hood and you have acces to the rubber boot covering the H11 bulb. Pull off the hood, take out the bulb and insert the HID bulb assembly. I picked up the bulb out cancellers so you have attach the wires from the kit and then the power wire from the oem headlight into the boc resister. A snap. Mounting on the driver side was easy. I just took some industrial strength velcro and put one piece on the metal strip just below the air box. On the back side of the ballast (I have the thin ones) the other side of the velcro and secured them together. For the wires and resister, I just zip tied them to another wire bundle. Cut a little slit in the rubber boot to let the wires come out and reinstall the boot. Total time, 15 minutes.

Passanger side: What a PIA! As I indicated, don't bother going thru the wheel, it doesn't really work. On my car the entire plastic liner would have to be disconnected and it isn't necessary. Fortunately my altima had a similar setup so I did the same thing on the fusion. Disconnect the small hose from the radiator to the overflow tank (just the front one. Then disconnect the tank with the nut and bolt along with the plastic attachment with a wire on it. (I believe the front and rear nuts are 10mm but you need a deep socket for the rear one. Unclip the two hoses from the a/c lines so you can lift the overflow bottle out of the way. There is a larger hose on the bottom don't disconnect that hose just the front one and keep it higher then the radiator or it will spill antifreeze on the motor. Now the fun part, take bungy cords and attach one from the hole on the rear of the overflow to the latch on the hood and the same with the front hole. Of course if you have a helper, they can just hold the overflow bottle out of the way. Snake your hand into the headlight area and remove the rubber bood and the connector from the existing H11 bulb. This is a pain because there isn't a lot of room in their. I did it with a long screwdriver from the top, popping the clips on the side and pulling them apart. Once the bulb is out, carefully install the HID bulb. I had to do this twice because I didn't get it to seat properly and the bulb was pointing to the driver side after I put it all together, so make sure the bulb is seated correctly. It is a pain. I suggest you connect all the wires from the kit and turn it on to see if it is aimed properly before mounting the ballast and securing the other wires. I mounted the ballast using industrial velcro with the hard part of the velcro mounted just behind the headlight assembly on the inside of the fender. The ballast is then secured to the velcro on the fender. This allows you to zip ti the wires to the black piece of plastic that attaches the radiator support. After I mounted everything I put a little slit in the boot and sealed it up. The passanger side took a little longer because I had to tried to go thru the wheel well, about a 20 minute waste of time. As I mentioed, I had to go back after everything was buttoned up and get the bulb mounted correctly. The second time I did it , it also took me about 15 minutes. I haven't had the opportunity to see how they work at night but they do light up the garage nicely. Here is how they look

Where did you get the kit from? HID is something I got very used to, that is the only thing that I would add to my car when it arrives. Have you had a chance to use them at night?

To answer questions, they are really great at night, substantially better then the stock bulbs. The first week I used the fog lights and the regular lights and there was a lot of light but with these bulbs (I have 35 watts) there is a massive amount of light in front of me and nobody seems to be upsed when driving towards me. It was raining here in NJ on saturday and when I was driving a cop was giving me some looks but I noticed when he drove past he was just checking out the car. You have to admit, it is a sharp looking car. I added a rear window shade (something I have done with all my cars since the early 80's) and the 18" wheels are very eye catching.

I got them from a place called Dabears2k out on the West Coast. I ordered them on tuesday and they arrived on friday. Very good service, the ballasts are the DDM thin ones and the bcm is well built and all the connections seem very watertight. If your wanting more light, I would go with either the 5K or 6K bulbs. I had the 5K ones on my altima and 6h 6K ones on the fusion. My personal preference is the 5K ones I think they give a slightly cleaner light.

So do our cars have the bulb out warning system? From the owners manual it doesn't mention it as a warning in the message center? Did you try it without the eliminators?

No, I didn't try. I figured I would be on the safe side and put them in. I was reading someplace that the cars have cabin air filters but the manual doesn't mention that either.

I don't thinik the stock lights are bad at all, specially when you run the fog lights which are actually very good. The beam pattern seems to throw the light farther then other cars, such as my wife's altima. I guess because the cutoff is exceptionally good and the lenses are also very good, using the HIDs really lights the road in front of you. One thing the HIDs do that the regular lights don't pick up the reflection of deer eyes. We have tons of them around me since there is a reservation (jersey word for park) and a greenway right near me. I have deer all over the place and they really like to jump in front of cars. I found that I can see them in the woods better with the HIDs reflecting off the eyes and for some reason, they seem to just stop in their tracks with the HID lights. I not only noticed that in NJ but when I go out to Iowa there is an area in southwest Iowa where they have trophy deer all over the place and spot them at the edges of the corn fields really quickly at night.

I am a true believer in lots of light. When I ride my motorcycle I have all three front lights on and I may convert my headlight to a HID simply because nobody ever sees you when your riding.

Thanks for the answers as well as your impressions, it sounds like you have had HID for a while and are used to it as am I...I'm trying to get an idea as to how the stock Lincoln is rated, it appears it may be a 4300 but can't fiond that answer yet...would just assume to duplicate that as I don't want any hassles from the police over it.

The place you bought from has a pretty darn good warranty! Only thing that is throwing me right now is the huge differences in prices between different companies, trying to decipher why (hype/name vs. true quality) as I want to do this once...willing to pay more if it is justified by superior quality. Why did you buy from these people? Past experience?

Thx-

I was very happy from the place I got them. My last set for my old car I got someplace else and their service was also outstanding. I would think anyone who sponsers is going to provide very good service because if they don't it doesn't take much time to kill off their business. Also keep in mind that there are always are going to be people you never make happy, that is just part of doing business. As far as the lights to get, I had 5k in my last car and went with the 6k on the fusion. Looking at the other ford products, I have see what appeared to be both 5k and 6k lights depending on how your looking at them. Mine have a slight tint of blue, similar to several GM some Acura and BMW versions of HIDs. If your want to be on the safe side go whith the 5K versions.

Hey pcsgrp35se... How are your HID's and headlight enclosures holding out? Just curious as I have heard that some HID's if overpowered can add addional heat and affect the housing of them... However if appropriately powered there should be no abnormalities and curous to your present status (since they've been in for close to 2 weeks now...)

Responses and a continued update woudl be appreicated... As I know that the Lincoln MKS has equivilant headlights to the Fusion, but comes standard with self adjusting HID's... So I suppose there isn't a real issue here, but again any feedback would be appreciated!

So far no problems with the enclosures since the bulbs don't really feel like they are getting very hot. I since moved the driver side ballast to the inside of the fender so it isn't under the air box, makes for a cleaner install. I was having second thoughts about 6k vs 5k but I don't think it is going to be an issue, most of the bmw's I see appear to be around 6k and with the parabolics the cutoff is really good. Your right about self adjusting it doesn't happen but nobody has given me a high beam flash as of yet

Guy's HID's run at least half as hot as halogens. There will be no issues with the housings. I have "german" "chinese" and "ebay" HID kits and never had a problem. Wanting to pay more for a warranty is foolish. If I took the stickers off of these kits and threw them in a box I wouldn't be able to tell them apart. I'm positive they are all the same, coming from the same factory in China regardless of what it says on the box.

  • 4 weeks later...

I'd like to get a set of HID's for my Fusion and had a couple questions:

1. Has anyone confirmed if the 2010 needs the BOW kit?

2. Are the HID's only for the lowbeams? Has anyone put HID's in the highs?

3. Any recommendations 35W vs. 55W?

The install looks really simple and the prices aren't bad.

Hi Sundedo. :D I will answer the question I am sure of: You do not use HID's in the high beam position. The reason? HID's take several seconds to warm up, so you will effectively lose the "Flash to Pass" feature of the high beams. In other words, if you try to flash your high beams, they will not work properly due to the fact that they will not have any time to warm up. In addition, HID's are not designed to be constantly flipped on and off (again, due to the necessary "warm-up" time), as is the case with high beams. That is why auto manufacturers do not use HID lighting for the high beam position.

Also, while I assume most people already know this, I will mention it for those who still may not: Aftermarket HID kits are illegal for on-road use in the U.S and Canada. Every aftermarket kit, no exceptions. The only HID lighting that is legal in the U.S. and Canada is lighting that was installed at the factory, by the Auto Manufacturer themselves. However, they can be used legally in the fog lights.

Not trying to tell anyone what to do, simply providing the information for an educated decision.

Whatever you decide to do, good luck. :beerchug:
