blazerdude20
History seems to be repeating itself. The original Capri was sold as a "baby Mustang" for the European market, and made its first appearance in the U.S. as a Mercury. Now that Ford intends to revive the Capri name, it seems certain that it will also be coming to the U.S. as (you guessed it) a Mercury. The new Capri concept is being prepared to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the name. Now that Mercury will become the small car arm of Lincoln, it only seems fitting that it will receive a premium version of a small European car. The concept will be developed on the next-generation global Focus platform and Ford Visos will serve as a muse of inspiration for the styling part. The first production version of the concept will arrive in the US market by 2010. from top speed via motortrend.

ANTAUS
Essentially it'll be a Volvo C70/Euro Focus Cabriolet senario...I think it's fitting and gives the shared Lincoln/Mercury a youthful coupe option they can pick from ...
PREMiERdrum
This is great news... and a bit of positive for Mercury! I think it could be a good seller, with the right advertising. Could help displace some of those God-awful EOS I see on the roads around here.
SVTCobra
Grrrr... why use that name for a compact car! I owned a 1984 Mercury Capri, bubble hatch and all. The "new" Capri should be a Mustang variant with IRS, Ecoboost 3.5 and paddle shift with some unique body panels.

If there's going to be a Mustang variant, it should be a Cougar. Capri is perfect for the Euro-Sporty car... just as it was from '71-'77. I also owned a bubble-hatch Capri... an '86 5.0. The last Mercury muscle car! Edited April 22, 2009 by therealmrmustang

PREMiERdrum
Fixed it for you Good call. One of the anchors at the last station I worked at bought one. The top malfunctioned in the down position, and it sat at Midwest Auto Group in Dublin, OH for 9 WEEKS until an engineer could be brought in from Germany. She did get a loaner. Two actually, the first was a Jetta that had a tranny failure after a few days.

blksn8k2
I also owned a bubble-hatch Capri... an '86 5.0. The last Mercury muscle car! +1 I had one of the last 86 Capris built. They must have been running out of parts as mine came with a Mustang GT molding on the driver's side and the correct plain molding on the other side. Ordered in the spring and took delivery in early summer of 86. It was a 5.0L, 5-speed with 3.08 gears and T-tops. Med gray metallic with charcoal interior. Fun little car. Dangerous as hell in the winter though. :shades:

rmc523
Excellent pic! I'd be interested if that were a "tits-perfect" rendering... I'd think it's close, except I'd assume whatever new model this would be would be based of the redesigned 2011/12 Focus. No, No, Nooooooooo....!! rmc523
That's German Engineering for ya. Hopefully my family doesn't have to experience this extreme a case of "German Engineering" with my mom's BMW (335 for those that don't know, since I took it off my sig). We've had some problems, but most were/have been minor.
ds91776
I know I'll get burned by this, but any "unique" coupe or convertible made by Mercury should be branded as a Cougar, that is Mercury's most famous name.

I'll be the first to bite.....I (and likely others) disagree......the Cougar name cannot just be stuck on any convertible....it has to be a real effort at making a true Cougar, which is why, IMO, the Capri name is much more appropriate in this case. NickF1011
Am I the only one who thinks Capri is an uber-feminine sounding name in the first place? The first thing that pops into my head is the fugly FWD-roadster and women's half-pants. To that end, Capri on a Focus variant is just fine as far as I'm concerned. However, I'm sure this (if true) will piss off Ford Jellymoulds.
