Ford Jellymoulds
Fiesta has made it to the top spot in Europe in March according to JATO's numbers that were released on 16th April. Fiesta has ditched dull boring bland styling and Ford were rewarded with 52,805 sales they were up +15.5% on March last year as European car sales fell by 9%. Focus sales fell by -22.7%, and the bland dull generic Mondeo just never makes Europe's top 10 best sellers and is nowhere to be seen as usual which always use to be topped by the Taunus/Cortina Gotta say l wonder if Fiat will still want to merge with Chrysler in a weeks time as the deadline gets closer as Fiats sales were up +12.8% helped by Fiat 500, Punto & Fiat Panda sales up +62.2% in a falling market, why would they want to hitch up with deadwood? GM look like will be closing down plants in the US of models that are not selling well, and will be re-opening them in China when the market picks up as they head into bankruptcy, lets hope this does not start a computer making trend of moving car production to China on mass. GM also look like they will be giving away their European operations for next to nothing. Gotta say l am glad Ford got rid of J/LR, deadwood Jaguar/Land Rover Group sales fell -38.4%, Land rover -41.5% & Jaguar -31.1%. Europes Top 10 Cars March 2008 1. Ford Fiesta - 52,805 +15.5% 2. VW Golf - 46415 -0.1% 3. GM Corsa - 40,346 -10.7% 4. Peugeot 207 - 39,499 -15.4% 5. VW Polo - 38,316 +30.3% 6. Fiat Punto - 37,337 +12.2% 7. Ford Focus - 35,398 -22.7% 8. jpd80
Hey FJM, Any reason why the Focus has slipped so badly, could it be sales shifting to Fiesta? 7. Ford Focus - 35,398 -22.7%
SkapeGote
Sup, I think the Fiesta sells more because of price than being better. Also this anti-Mondeo rhetoric is getting a bit old don't you think?. You do not like the Mondeo, we get it. To be fair the almost everything on that list is a small car. Bad economy, people buy what is cheap when they need a new car. The Mondeo also cost almost 7000 more than the Fiesta. Your comparison is based on bias and not being very fair. In Canada Chrysler sales were awesome in February, not because they made awesome cars, but because of the price. I think that is part of why Fiesta sales are higher. Don't get me wrong I am happy Ford is on top, but the Fiesta is still a throw-a-way car. They are just meant to get you by until you can afford something better. Could be jpd80, the Fiesta is a better bargain for the price. Isn't there a new Focus due out within a year or so? That would affect sales. Skape Could be right Scape, We've just had the updated South African Focus arrive here in Australia, the front end was designed in Melbourne by Ford AUS and is a graft onto the previous C1 Focus body and doors, it will do until we start building the Global C2 locally in 2011 Edited April 22, 2009 by jpd80

Skape Cannibalization of sales, cheaper price, new model are all reasons.....We are in a recession, so in Europe a downsize from Focus to Fiesta is not that big of a deal. Not sure if the same will happen here in US. I don't think majority of our overweight population can even fit in a Fiesta. I think the Focus is already too small for many. :-)

Don't be so sure about that, the new Fiestas are surprisingly roomy inside. Front passenger compartment is about the size of original Focus and the rear has 3" more leg room than Mustang. TStag
That top 10 is heavily distorted by scrappage schemes. The Golf is actually doing amazing numbers. It's a almost premium car with a much bigger price tag than a Fiesta. VW is actually blowing people out of the water to be honest. Look at the Polo. It sells in lower numbers than the Fiesta but the sticker price is a lot higher. Who's really winning? It is a good result by Ford Europe but keep things in perspective is all I'm saying. Most big cars are down considerably. Look at the mid size cars for example Clio, 206 and Astra all down by big percentages. BMW were once actually in that list but big premium cars are really struggling right now. By the way Jaguar is down for 2 reasons. The XJ is no longer in production as Jag switch the lines over. So if you want a new XJ you can probably have it in any colour as long as it's black. And the XF wasn't just selling out of XF's it was building a 7 month order book. Sales are just coming back to expected levels (in a recession by the way). Also name a single SUV car maker with increasing sales? It's cyclical. When the upturn comes you will see Ford sales of Mondeo's get hit by increasing sales of BMW 3 series. It's hardly rocket science is it! Fiat are buying Chrysler in part for Jeep (also with crappy sales right now) because come the upturn few people will want a large Fiat. Hey TStag,, thanks for your perspective. we definitely need to hear from Europe. Keep up the information.. I know I was reading a lot on boards from England, and see how they have so many cars to chose from. thanks for your input again. And BTW I had a '74 Triumph I loved it, just not the upkeep cost for 2.5 years, so don't let Jelly get to you. Now yours is a collectors. You guys need each other. 630land
Sales #'s show that 'bringing over the Mondeo" would have been a failure. [Also look how badly the Opels sold at the Saturn dealers that are now closing!] The new Fusion is better for the US market.
