BORG
It looks like the bill passed by the House is not going to make it through the Senate. If this happens, does GM go bankrupt the next day? Edited December 10, 2008 by BORG

Pioneer
It looks like the bill passed by the House is not going to make it through the Senate. If this happens, does GM go bankrupt the next day? If that happens, the only think preventing GM/Chrysler from going bankrupt is bush writing a check out of the TARP fund. He has the authority, and that is the only way we will stay out of a depression.

I figure he will just let GM and Chrysler collapse and let Obama try and fix the mess. The only saving grace that Ford has is that if they outlast GM and Chrysler things might get so bad that the Government will have no choice but to save the last company. Extreme4x4
Make that all the transplants, and even some "foreign only" manufacturing. Many suppliers are multinational.
simplesituations
political posturing at it's best, they are grandstanding so when the next election comes through, the republicans will say this is what we did before we left and say they saved the country

Whether or not Ford would survive a period of minimal production due to suppliers going down would all depend on whether or not they had to keep an active payroll during this time. 2005Explorer
The suppliers will be protected. I am sure if Ford really believed that they wouldn't even have shown up at the hearings. Bill Ford would be dancing on his desk and thinking of his new found wealth by selling millions of cars and trucks when he inherited a huge chunk of market share. I mean honestly if GM and Chrysler did go down and only Ford was left what exactly would be their pickup market share?!?!? Edit: The only other explanation would be that it was all for PR. They tried to be a team player and help, but since they could not save those companies, customers that like American cars and trucks should now come to Ford. Pioneer
Well, it passed the House. Looks like it's up to the Senate now.
Critic
The suppliers will be protected. WHAT is your connection to Toyoda? Because your bias to any American product has ALWAYS shown in your posts. How close do you live to that Laf. Plant? How many family members are employed by a Japanese plant? I know your involved with them in one way or another. You love Kia but say you'd buy a Ford 'IF' they did yada yada yada. IF IF IF and IF Your on this site for basically one thing. to drum business to your site. BUT to gain access TO YOUR SITE. you want people to put in the vehicle lic. plate number. Would you like my S.S. # also? I don't care for ANY person that wants a vehicle NOT made in this country, and will NOT listen to one word they try to use to justify a reason to ship money out of this country while they also sit back and moan about the loss of good paying jobs and the worthless work ethic of people that pay taxes in MY country. So as you start to see YOUR living standard drop. take a look in YOUR mirror and wonder if it might be because of something YOU did.
94bronco
Does anyone really have any clue as to what is going to happen to the suppliers if GM and Chrysler go under? If the suppliers can stay in operation Ford sales will skyrocket as I do remember a poll from not to long ago that had 25% ( I believe) Americans saying they would never consider buying a car from an import brand, Also truck sales will absolutely hit the roof if this were to happen. BORG
Again, it's not the House passing the bill that's the problem, it's the Senate.

94bronco
After thinking about this bailout package for a lil while I have come to the conclusion that I do not want it to pass, Does anyone actually think that GM is going to return to profitiability? How long has it been since they made money? The only way for them to ever make a profit again would be to significantly downsize by eliminating atleast half of their brands ( Pontiac, Saab, Saturn, GMC) and pretty much starting over. Who actually wants to give their money to Chrysler too? That is another lost cause that has bad reliability and a rather weak product line up plan for the forseeable future. The only company that actually deserves a loan is Ford as they have actually made a profit in the last century and have a strong product plan and have done the restructuring that GM only wishes they had done years ago, But even if GM wanted to restructure how do you get rid of the amount of brands that they would have to get rid of without pre packaged bankruptacy? Just make GM file Chapter 11 and they may actually have a chance of surviving, That is of course provided Wagoner is sent packing.
94bronco
How long has the Windstar been out of production again? If anything there should be a Venture in that picture with coolant pouring out after the intake gasket blew ( My parents had a Venture 3.4 and it was a POS)
RichardJensen
That's what I'm wondering. Pretty broad and vague statement. Besides, it wouldn't be fair to let weaker suppliers fail because their customers can no longer afford to buy parts. That's totally different than letting GM & Chrysler fail because their customers can no longer afford new cars. It's totally different because............ well........ uh.................. THE SUPPLIERS WILL BE PROTECTED!!! PAY NO ATTENTION TO THE MAN BEHIND THE CURTAIN!!!!!
