Mass layoffs expected in NASCAR this week

 

The glitz and glamour surrounding NASCAR’s championship-deciding race roared on at Homestead-Miami Speedway as if nothing was amiss.

 

Lucky fans still lined up for their pre-race garage tours, celebrities and CEO’s crowded pit road and the champagne flowed following Jimmie Johnson’s record-tying third consecutive title.

 

Yet it felt a little flat.

I don't think this has as much to do with the type of racing (even though some people obviously don't like NASCAR) as it does with the economy in general. It is still one of the most popular sports in America and still draws large TV audiences and ticket sales.

I swear it seems sometimes as though all these cutbacks and hand wringings are only making a bad situation much worse. It is definitely having a ripple effect. Every job that is lost means one more income that will not be spent on goods and services, etc. etc, etc. Scary times...

NASCAR has some of the most brand loyal fans out there, whether or not you like the racing. The reason the layoffs are happening has nothing to do with the type of racing. It has to do with the pitiful state of our economy due to the credit-market-driven recession. Sponsorship dollars are how NASCAR stays alive, and in tight times, companies are slashing their marketing budgets (which is stupid). When teams lose dollars, they lose their ability to pay their bills - so the teams must cut costs somewhere. It's a ripple effect, as was mentioned.

Why don't you tell us what you really think?

 

People are losing jobs, mainly due to economic reasons, and all you guys can say is "NASCAR sucks."

 

I think the banking industry sucks a lot more than NASCAR ever did. At least NASCAR understands its business.

 

Whether or not you like it, NASCAR has a HUGE economic impact on the United States - especially the East Coast. This effects FAR more than NASCAR directly. I predict that unemployment in North Carolina is going to be a bad problem next year. Its effects won't be as far reaching as Detroit's woes, but considering NASCAR is very closely tied to Detroit, the results could be even more devistating. Most things in our country just plain aren't looking good right now.

Cousin Carl kicked some ass this year. Toyota really chocked big time. Racing was tight right up until the very end. I do attend some of the races, but prefer to stay at home and watch it.

Let Toyota bail 'em out. They'd only be returning the favor.

NASCAR stopped being entertaining when all of a sudden racers like Dale Jarrett, Mark Martin, Ricky Rudd, etc suddenly stopped being Top 10 drivers week in and week out and some young 20 something like Kurt Busch and Ryan Newman became weekly winners. Their rise to stardom was just as fast as the other demise to the bottom tier. Something smells more than fishy too me. Lets micromanage every aspect of the series to where the only option left is trying to decide whether you want to race an engine with the distributor in the front or back. Now there is a recipe for excitement. Oh boy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would love to see "sedan racing" (I think that what it is called in Europe and down under) come to the US. Kind of like the old Trans Am racing but with bigger cars.

 

EFI, turbos, whatever. Extra weight for OHC, turbos, etc. Make them run the stock PCM hardware, just tweak the software ! With E85 they could claim they are green !

It is a choice, just like smoking and drinking....

 

They are trying to make everything level everywhere... Lets put a cage around all the slow antelope since they could get eaten by lions....

 

Who's going to protect us from the people that are trying to protect us? If someone wants to drive a tin can at 225 mph then by God let them.... That's racing.......

 

Good thing the Shelby cobra was introduced in the 60's because it would never fly today.......

 

When they started allowing frt wheel drive cars to compete was when I started losing interest.........

 

If they are factory frt wheel drive, they should require them to race frt wheel drive... Period...

 

The Boss 429 would have never been built if it wasnt for drive what you sell......

 

The Nascar fans are the problem, just like most of us Americans... me included.... When you are willing to pay 5 bucks for a hotdog and 50 bucks for nose bleed seats...... They will continue to do what they want.....

 

Quit paying for that crap and supporting their rediculous requirements and they will change....

While I'm definitely not happy with the direction NASCAR has taken, its never good to see stuff like this happening. Once again we have a huge excess. Why do the drivers need to be making the tremendous salaries they do? It goes on and on from there. And when times get tough, do we cut their salaries or the salaries of the owners? No, we dump a bunch of the underlings. Get rid of 40 people to raise 1.5 million instead of cutting 15 peoples salary by 30%.

 

Its just nuts.

Looks to me like NASCAR is going to have tough time filling out 43 car field in the cup races. If they do, you can bet many cars will be even slower than normal with difference between rich and poor growing exponentially. Even the rich teams will have hard time filling oiut their teams and the poor teams will have very hard time.

I guess Derrick Cope will be starting a lot more races and parking it after 10 laps just to get a full field.

Will it be like Indy Cars where they have full field for Indy 500 and can barely get 20 cars racing at the lesser venues for rest of season? I'm sure Daytona will have full field, but can the poorer teams race every race from Daytona in Feb. to end of Nov.? I doubt it with sponsorships with deep pockets harder to come by. Even Carl Edwards said that his sponsorhip would be changing as Office Depot is backing out. Of course, he is easily a top driver for a top team, and will get deep pocket sponsor, but the back marker teams may go begging. If NASCAR wants full field for every race, looks to me like they will have to shorten the season which would be great. Too many races anyway making each race meaningless.

Office Depot actually backed out because they are going to be onboard Tony Stewart's car next year. Carl Edwards has Aflac secured for next year, so I woudn't worry too much. Office Depot's back out from Carl Edwards was apparently due to their "cheating" at Las Vegas (which was a bunch of hooey, they weren't cheating). I find it ironic that Office Depot would leave Carl for Tony considering that Tony is pretty much the biggest PR nightmare ever (minus the Busch brothers).

Derrick Cope's relatives are the ones who helped me to become interested in NASCAR. They were my neighbors as a child and seeing a 3400 lbs stock car with its big V8 drive up my road was surreal for me. Derrick actually had his car's trailer at the house next door to mine, and one morning he drove the car around the subdivision where I lived a few times. I still have the Purolator Lumina matchbox car that he gave me that day as a gift - looks something on the order of this (only much smaller of course):

Derrick Cope actually won the Daytona 500 - but only a few remember because of who he beat that day. (Earnhardt fans are still bitter about it.)

 

NASCAR, in my opinion, has gone down hill since the mid 1990s. Ever since Jeff Gordon's emergence into the sport, the sport has gotten softer and softer. I'm glad at the safety advancements they have made, but there just isn't racing like there used to be.

I agree completely with the comments being made about driver salaries. I don't understand why lay offs for the guys who make the racing possible are happening when they could easily reduce the salaries of the people earning the most money to help the team get through a lean time. This is no different than the banking industry. The top guys continue to draw salary raises while the bottom guys continue to be forgotten or laid off.

Who cares about NASCAR anyway? Since they let Toyota in. They lost credibility as far as I'm concerned and I could care less.
