The Last Yugo

If you don't read the article, here at least are the jokes on the page.

How do you make a Yugo go faster? A tow truck.

What do you call a Yugo's shock absorbers? Passengers.

Two guys in a Yugo were arrested last night in Oakland following a push-by shooting incident.

Why does a Yugo have a defroster on the rear window? To keep your hands warm while you push it.

The new Yugo has an air bag. When you sense an impending accident, start pumping real fast.

A friend went to a dealer the other day and said, "I'd like a gas cap for my Yugo." The dealer replied, "Okay. Sounds like a fair trade."

Ah yes, reminds me of the time I saw a Yugo tooling down the PA turnpike with 6 people in it. Had to have been really close friends, as it must have been quite chummy with 4 in the back seat.

And yes, the factory was closed for about 3 or 4 years during the war over there - it was bombed several times - I think even once by NATO.

I think the 4 door version was called a Wego.

I remember a comment from a car magazine test: "The Yugo's engine doesn't have a power band, it has a power stripe and a pin stripe at that."

Problem with Yugo is their owners who never took a good care of their cars. Those who did had no problems.

I'm originally from Serbia when Yugo was in production. They are great little cars that can last a really long time if you take a good care of them. And parts are so cheap that it pays of to fix them every now and then. Yugos are very cheap, brand new one starts under 4,000 euros (and this is in a country where 20 year old Volkswagen diesels are worth around 3,000 euros), very economical and parts are so cheap and anyone car afford them. When I was in Serbia recently I paid around $5 for all 4 brake pads. Doesn't get any cheaper than that.

When I was in Serbia few months ago I drove my aunt's 1991 Yugo. That car is in a lot better condition that both of my 1992 Escort (sold in 2001) and 1997 Intrepid (sold in 2008).

And worst of all, people who are complaining the most are those people who never owned or even drove a Yugo.

During late 1970s and 1980s my dad had two Yugo Scala 101. Never had any major problems with them.

Here is a very nice Yugo with 1.3L twin-turbo 315 hp engine.

Nice car. I bet that a few motorists have been embarassed by it.

Also, I think a part of the Yugo's reputation in the US was due to how it was marketed over here.
