TStag
Ford has had talks with Renault to sell Volvo June 30, 2008 - 3:00 pm ET NEW YORK (Reuters) -- Ford Motor Co. has had exploratory talks with French automaker Renault SA to sell Volvo, but the initial talks broke down due to price differences, sources familiar with the matter told Reuters. The two parties have spoken again after their initial discussions, which were held last fall, the sources said. Ford has also had talks with China's third-largest automaker, Dongfeng Motor Group, as a potential partner for Volvo, one of the sources said. Ford spokesman Mark Truby declined to comment directly on the report, but said: "We announced earlier this year that Volvo is not for sale and that we are focused on improving Volvo's business results." TStag
This just seems to be a story that refuses to die. First BMW and then all these other possible bids. Maybe Volvo looks to pricey now given the state of things at the moment? I think Ford would get shot of Volvo if only someone would stump up the money.... battyr
I think it is a case that anything is for sale if the price is right. The price was not right.
68Cougar
This just seems to be a story that refuses to die. Yes that and the end of Mercury story that keeps coming up. I'll believe Volvo is sold or Mercury is dead when it's announced.

TStag
One hundred BILLION dollars!! Is that the amount Ford will pay someone to take Volvo away? Based on todays 28% drop in sales at Volvo I think it would be fair....

TStag
So, how were Jaguar's and Land Rover's sales this month. Something tells me you don't want to know. You mentioned JLR not me! Last month Land Rover was actually up (Globally) as was Jag. But I'd expect Land Rover to have had significant drop in the US this time given the state of the US car market. The key difference is that JLR is operating with health profit margins unlike Volvo who just axed 2000 staff!

No, and it's a lot more than what it will take to correct things. Notice that the S-80 is doing well in the shrinking market as are the 70's. The problems being the S40 and S60 and XC90, for which replacements are in the pipe-line. 2008 2007 S40 560 1,528 V50 209 254 S60 732 1,937 S80 1,033 1,099 V70 863 322 XC70 922 1,131 XC90 1,511 2,860 C70 724 441 C30 447

And frankly, since its sales to Tata, you really have NO idea what LR's profit margins are anymore. I suspect a great deal less than you want them to be. Big_Mack
Wow...if Renault bought Volvo car, then Volvo would own the Renault heavy truck company....and Renault would own the Volvo car company...what the hell would that make those two companies?!?! I suspect a great deal less than you want them to be. Why are you obsessed with the US market? JLR is a global business as is Volvo. But Volvo have been slipping globally. Can you not see how weak Volvo's margins are. Forget your obsession with JLR and focus on Volvo. Their margins are awfull, their sales are plumetting and they have bad currency issues to over come. I don't want to drag Land Rover into this but as you insist on doing so.... I'm relaxed about where Land Rover will be in 5 years time. Their plan over the next 5 years is to take Halewood to capacity by making a range of smaller MPV's and sell them for high prices. Range Rover will go into Bentley territory and be priced from $200,000. The LR3 will move into Range Rover's vacated territory and sell for $50,000 and the price increases will not just make them better cars but enable Land Rover to fit hi-tech eco friendly parts. Can you imagine Volvo trying to pull that trick off? No it's brand name is piss poor in comparison. Land Rover's business model is becoming less and less Volvo like and more Porsche like.... Can't you grasp that?

NickF1011
Why are you obsessed with the US market? Because I live in the US? Being that Ford no longer owns Jag and LR, I don't give a crap about either company. I don't know why you insist on talking about them here. Volvo global sales were up in 2007. Volvo's margins aren't any worse than Jaguar's. And you don't even know what denomination Volvo books its profits in. You've gone on and on about "euro" this and "euro" that. Sweden is not a euro country you twit.
MKII
Sweden is not a euro country you twit. If you google "map of Europe" Sweden will be a part of that map which many refer to as "Northern Europe". Edited July 2, 2008 by MKII
RichardJensen
In the political sense of not being part of the EU countries you are correct, but Sweden is considered to be "in Europe".If you google "map of Europe" Sweden will be a part of that map. No. Sweden IS part of the EU. http://europa.eu/abc/european_countries/index_en.htm Furthermore, the context clearly referred to currency, placing use of the word 'euro' into context.
