Tundra Problems Snowballing

Want to know what happens when you build your truck too light?

At GM they call it "bed gate parallelograming" due to excessive flex causing the tailgate to be crushed at the corners by the bed sides. You see this on some older rusted bed 1970's GM and Ford trucks after the has rotted in critical structure areas and bed starts to flop. That obviously isn't the case with the Tundra, which is just too light, too flexy and too cheap to do real work. This could be caused by rough roads, towing etc...aka normal work-type stuff. The other trucks have had ATVs and Golf Carts loaded into them (the white one). Golf carts are not so heavy that one axle should pretzel a tailgate. Actually you should be able to load it and haul it on the gate properly secured...not with a Toyota.

A petition has been launched. I find it telling that one of these people says that the Tundra owners manual actually warns owners not to drive with the gate down. In spite of this fact, Toyota sells bed extenders at its dealers for this truck(WTF?). Toyota clearly knows something that they aren't telling the owners...who have found out by losing their tailgates while going down the road, having them crack with less than 200 lbs on them and getting crunched at the corners due to excessive bed flex. Every single truck will need to be recalled to have new redesigned gates installed. Toyota has blown it with this truck, it will destroy their gleaming image of build quality within a year.

639 have signed the petition and counting. About a month ago they only had 125, and now up over 600. I love reading the comments. Toyota has a nightmare here abrwing:

639. Greg Fielding Please fix this...i dont want to have to pay for mine to get fixed someday

638. Stephen Guynes Toyota, please address this issue.

637. CHAZ mattison fix it!!!

636. george Edwards

635. Daniel Darimont

634. Jack Seals Do we have to return our trucks for another brand? I hope not. Please get in front of this and do the right thing (hopefully before someone gets hurt). We need to use our trucks like we have always used our trucks. Thank you in advance.

633. Robert Cartwright

632. Wayne K. Patrick Jr. My 2007 Toyota Tundra tailgate popped open with a load of furniture and the tailgate hit the trailer lift. I took it to Toyota and they said that the only trouble they are having is beds falling off while driving with the tailgates down. Well, mine popped open with a load. Cost $1,366.00 for a new 2007 Toyota Tundra Tailgate. They are on back order. I think they should recall them all before someone gets killed.

631. Jerry Kallenbach

630. Robert Schultz I have waited since 1982 to finaly purchase my toyota truck, I beleive toyota must make this right.

629. John Jenkins This needs to be fixed, or someone's going to get hurt. Then what, Toyota?

628. Maurice Griffith 2007 Tundra Crewmax purchased 11-07 if I would have read this before hand I would not have PURCHASED; Toyota should make this right

627. Richard Lofthouse

626. Rusty Sanderson

625. Brian Fowler 07 DC 5.7L. 8th purchased Toyota. Unacceptable tailgate and needs to be fixed by Toyota. Toyota needs to make this fix without undo stress on owners. Design flaws are inherent on new production vehicles. Tailgate on pickup is the work horse of the truck. FIX IT.

624. Presley Thompson

623. John Bateman vin 5TBBV58167S48****, Lmt'd + DC 5.7 4X4

618. Michael D Pritts

617. Scott Guerber

616. Doug Watling I trust in toyota to step up and find a spolution to the problem. I just bought mine last week and as a general contractor, I'll be putting it through normal use not abuse. I would expect a tailgait to handle the rigors of an everyday truck.

615. Roger Steves rtsteves@wavecable.com

614. Tim Harvey 07 SR5 Tundra 4x2 5.7l

613. Richard Apodaca

592. Jared Pittman Though I haven't had the problem yet, I sign so that if I do there will hopefully be a readily available fix. I will also support my fellow owners journey to get their trucks fixed in an acceptable manner.

Now we know how Toyota made the Tundra so quick for a big pickup. MAKE IT LIGHT WITH LOW GRADE STEEL AND PUT BIG MOTOR IN WITH LOTS OF HORSEPOWER AND GET GREAT ACCELERATON, GOOD BRAKING, AND ALMOST BEST IN SEGMENT FUEL MILEAGE.

But Toyota outsmarted themselves forgetting some pickkup owners actually haul heavy items from time to time. Now we have tail gates buckling and other problems associated with its lightness and build quality. Ford builds the F-150 with rugged build quality that will stand up to anything its owner puts it through including heavy payloads and using tailgate in all kinds of different ways. Ford practically reinforces everything. The F-150 looks like a vault compared to the Tundra.

And of you can not afford that since your crappy Toyota brke your bank account then this should be cheap enoguh and will still work better than the Tundra

The only solution to a Tundra is to buy a real truck.

Yes indeed... There is nothing like the 1970's Ford Trucks! They'll still run for another 30 years! I mean Ford hasn't had the top sales in the F-Series for 30+ years now right? :headscratch: :beerchug:

God I hope these turds all start having more problems. I went to the mall with the wife and just going down the parking lot and looking around for a spot I saw 6 Tundras with paper plates and two with regular plates. No "new" f-150's in sight... Then driving home (5 miles) I saw two more, I hate living in Toyota land (so. Cal).

Maybe the wildfires out there will put those Tundras out of their misery!

Nissan took the exact same approach with the Titan, but not Titan commercials ridicule elemental design flaws of the tundra. 'HA!-someone built one lighter then ours!'
