02MustangGT
I just read an interesting tidbit in the latest Motor Trend in the "We hear" section, here's the summary: Ford's new F-150 will debut with the 6.4 Powerstroke Any truth to this? I thought Ford was working on a smaller diesel for the F-150? Not that I believe everything that MT prints, because that is certainly not the case, but this sounds interesting. Especially since it's been reported that the smaller diesel will not be ready until a year after launch.
one2gamble
If it fits I wouldnt see why they would need another "smaller" engine.

02MustangGT
Not sure if it would fit in the current F-150, maybe with the redesign they are making room for it? Oh, on the smaller engine, my thought is that they need to debut the F-150 with something other than the current engine choices and since the smaller diesel won't be ready, this is the next best thing. rmc523
That would be a very interesting thing. I think it would stop a great deal of the complaining. It would also take away some lower end (F-250) Super Duty buyers though.
Sherminator98
if I understand correctly, the Power stroke won't fit. I thought that Ford Designed the cab of the Super Duty to be removed so they could work on the engine...

LincolnFan
First of all, I don't think it will fit. Second of all, can the F-150 handle all of that torque?

Motor Trend is about as reliable as the Weekly World News, and the Powerstroke is a huge engine with all the plumbing involved..

Yeah, I have seen the 2009 test mule in person and it's a huge truck. The cab is bigger and of course roomier. I have no idea if 6.4 diesel is going in it as option, but this 1/2 ton truck looks every bit as big as 3/4 ton truck. That's why maybe a F-100 makes sense since the F-150 just keeps growing. 2005Explorer
Well if the 6.4L Powerstroke is going into the F-150 the competition just got crushed in terms of towing capability.
Ralph Greene
I'm not a F 150 Expert, but did help drive a F350 from Florida ro Alaska with recent PSD engine pulling 12,000 or more lb trailer. That engine is so powerful, I would think if someone hooked a F 150 with that engine to a 20,000 lb trailer, he might pull the truck apart eventually. You would really have to strengthen up the frame and other parts a lot....and then it's not a F 150.
twintornados
if the F-150 is getting larger.....then it would be a good time to roll out the new EU Ranger (F100??) in the US. Either keep the current Ranger with much needed updates...or replace it with a D3 chassis'd version.
02MustangGT
It's all speculation at this point, but maybe Motor Trend heard the words "diesel in the new F-150" and assumed it is the 6.4L. Maybe we'll be pleasantly surprised and the truck will debut with the smaller 4.5L (or whatever) diesel that Ford is supposedly working on. fbmphil
I'm guessing it's a typo, and it reads "6.4" instead of "4.4"
igor
^^^my guess too - that and what Blueblood said. Igor

blazerdude20
what about the redone 6.0 powerstroke from the 08 e series. its supposed to be a bit smaller
DearbornDerek
The 6.4 (and 6.0) is not going nor was it ever intended to go into the 09 150. it's too big. the only thing bigger about the cab is the front clip and the crew cab is getting 6" longer in back. Markford14
I have read that the F-150 will have option of a diesel in 2009. That engine will be either a 4.4 or 4.5 and V6. It is similar to the 6.4 minus two cyclinders rumor says. From my under standing it going to be like 4.5 that is the LCF truck as the 6.0L was in the superdutys. As for it taking some 250 buyers away that would be a good thing. The point being many people want a diesel and get one but they just dont use it what is capible of doing. So a 150 with diesel will serve alot. Personally if i was in the market when they offer it I will buy.

The LCF already has a deisel from Navistar that was supposed to go in the F-150, but couldn't make the emissions standards coming in 2010. Add in all the trouble Ford is having with Navistar, They ARE NOT going to use that engine in the next F-150, its coming from JV work with Peugeot in Europe. Plus Ford is working on its own in-house 6.8L Scorpion Diesel to replace the 6.4L power stroke, which should come out in 2011...
mizzitch
The LCF 4.5 didn't pass NVH tests for consumer vehicles. I've read that Ford may use a 4.4L V8 designed in the diesel facility in Britian.
