MIAMI-DADE
THE Miami paper said today in conjection with Motorweek said the Crown Vic must come up with a hybrid model to stay afloat.N.Y.C wants the entire fleet to be hybrids in the next 5 to 10 years. The city has been testing hybrid Escapes and to my amazement they are holding excellent on the potholed streets of New York City and the Escapes are running just as good as the Vics.Chicago and LA also want the hybrid cabs on the street as well. I just hope they come up with one soon.It seems like the hybrid would work well for Leos also as they idle half of the time with the A/C on especially here in South Florida where its a sauna 10 months a year. 92merc
I'd agree that a hybrid VIC would be good. But hows that going to help all the idleing? Run the compressor off Electric? Oh yeah, that'll be efficient. I don't care how you are setting and idling, that's probably the most ineffecient thing you can do on a vehicle. So the LEO's might not get much for realized MPG gains if they are dong that all the time.

My neighbor a Preces and when his other half goes to the mall he sits in the car and reads a book with the car running on ONLY the electric with the A/C on.Thats been going on for a least 2 years now all the time. The battery should last for 8 years.Or at least what it should last according to the experts.
SysEng
Hybrid = Fashion Statement :cheerleader: Translation, sell it to the skirts, ecofreaks, and anybody else low on numeracy skills. In the real world a diesel is more economical.

A Crown Vic with a diesel and hydraulic hybrid/launch assist set-up would make much more sense. A diesel uses hardly any fuel at idle (allowing use of AC) and fuel consumption on take-off and in stop and go traffic would be a lot less. In the real world a diesel is more economical. Say whatever you want but if it dosen't happen soon Ford will lose the taxi market in New York City>LA >Chicago and rest will follow in the next 5 to 10 years. The city wants Hybrids not Diesel. You have to give them want they want.New York City has around 13 thousand cabs and they must buy them brand new and they must be off the streets in 7 years for private owners and 4 years for fleets. Most are Crown Vics with only a sprinkling of minivans.Since the Escape Hybrid was a success [i just was up there and saw around 6 of them]iwe have a problem if the Crown Victoria dosen't come up with a Hybrid. Its almost like New York City warned Ford. Its bad enough were losing the police market at a steady pace to Nopar with the Charger.Right now county Broward County is trying out 4 V8 Chargers as i write this. The Sheriff claims they get better miliage then the Vic even if its only 2 miles per gallon. He claims if he changes the 1400 fleet of Crown Vics it will save alot of money in the long run.Broward county and Miami-Dade and Palm Beach have used Vics for the longest time. You know if one county changes the rest will only follow. So far the cops said they like the faster pickup. The only complaint was trunk space so who knows what is going to happen at the end of the testing.Hopefully they will stay with the Vic but at this point seems unlikely. Diesel still better and New York is a backwards city. Though I must admit, I myself have seen a Broward Sheriff's Police Charger running around. Ford will have to update car if they want it to survive. Edited May 27, 2006 by StevenJ
96towncarcartier
The biggest problem with the Charger is that some idiot in Germany designed it. For police use, it has TERRIBLE VISIBILITY!!! As a patrol car, you need to be able to SEE AROUND YOU. Plus, the tiny trunk means you run out of room F A S T. After a cage is put in it, prisoners will be really cramped like never before. You know, Ford offered the perfect solution to economy AND environmental concerns for Y E A R S. A Compressed Natural Gas Crown Vic. CNG produced almost NO EMISSIONS AT ALL. Some police departments bought ONLY the CNG Vic's and were very proud of them. But, it ended production a few years ago. Hybrid would be cool. But for now, Flex Fuel is an option. I think if they put the 5.4L in the car, it would blow the Charger away.
