mackinaw
Apparently Sergio has some medical issues: https://www.detroitnews.com/story/business/autos/chrysler/2018/07/21/sergio-marchionne-out-fiat-chrysler-ferrari-mike-manley-replacement/812016002/
Bob Rosadini
Does not sound good for Sergio. Say a prayer for this guy as when you go in for "shoulder surgery" and all of a sudden you are out of the picture, sounds like the surgery discovered a far more serious condition. Not everyone on this site thought much of him but for sure a hardworking "no bullshit" kind of guy who did not mince words.
akirby
Sounds more like post surgery complications - blood clots, pneumonia, etc. sometimes happen after surgery.
atomcat68
He is a known chain smoker, and smoking never improves your health.
atomcat68
Now that I looked at the article, it does sound bad. my guess is that "shoulder pain" could have been cancerous, but any surgery has risks. I hope for the best for him and I hope he conquers this and makes a speedy recovery. Edited July 21, 2018 by atomcat68
Anthony
For better or worse (for FCA) it is the end of an era. Best wishes for his health.
mackinaw
He is a known chain smoker, and smoking never improves your health. I guess he stopped smoking a year ago. But I'm sure damage was done.
jpd80
Whatever the medical reason, Sergio has been replaced and FCA is moving on.with a new CEO It will be interesting to see how plans shake out from here...
fuzzymoomoo
Grapevine says Sergio may have suffered a serious stroke, which is probably why most of the articles about it read like an obituary. Best wishes you crazy itialian.

Fgts
I've read it's more serious then what's reported. IMO Sergio knew his condition and masked it over the last few years with the Elkon family in order to not upset investors and workers, he had a good run nonetheless. Anthony
Wow, horrible. Marchionne suffered embolism during cancer surgery, Italian report says Former Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne suffered an embolism while undergoing an operation for an invasive shoulder sarcoma and has irreversible damage to his brain function, and he had failed to tell Fiat Chrysler Chairman John Elkann of the seriousness of his illness, an Italian business website reported Tuesday. ... Sources told Lettera43, which has led coverage of Marchionne's illness, that during the operation, Marchionne was struck by a cerebral embolism, plunging him into a coma. It also claims that Marchionne is now being kept alive only by machines, and that doctors said there was no hope of recovery. jcartwright99
It's a sad reminder that life is short and you can go at any time. RIP Sergio! I will remember him for his quirks and wanting to put a hellcat engine in everything.
