Info on new gas engine???

Recommended Posts

There is no engine program currently listed as a replacement for the 6.2L. There is a 7.3L engine that is going to replace the 6.8L. Given the bore size necessary to support that displacement, there is essentially a 0% chance that the engine is a 3-valve as that was a solution to the narrow bore valve shrouding problem that the mod motor had. It will not be a turbo engine. Rumors are flying that this will be an OHV engine instead of OHC.

To be completely accurate, the valves are overhead either way. The difference is whether there is one cam in the block or two overhead. That's why I use pushrod instead of OHV (even though I understand that's accepted terminology).

Interesting that all of these "experts" rarely mention "medium duty"-but today most experts seem to have accepted a new definition of "medium duty" to refer to class 4 and 5 trucks.

Old school here-and "medium duty" to me is class 6 and 7. And it is that market that really needs an efficient cost effective gas motor as an alternative to diesel.

I can't imagine how difficult it must be to manage OAP's operation when they have such big swings in monthly production. If they had a state of the art gasoline motor-make that "gaseous" or spark ignition motor, sales of 650 and 750 would take off IMO. There are plenty of operators out there who either can't afford the diesel premium OR are smart enough to know that while they need power for their application, they don't have the annual utilization to justify that expenditure.

Hopefully that new motor will arrive soon enough to keep Ford in a competitive position in class 6 and 7.

Actually Medium duty is class 4-7. Light duty only covers up to class 3. HD is class 8.

My biggest concern is that the new engine will NOT be big enough ! I think it really need to be 8L or more with a long rod/stroke for maximum torque. I don't know how big (or should I say small) the engine bay is on a F450/550 compared to a F650/750 but anyone thinking this will fit in a F150/250/350 should forget about it.

I was surprised when the 6.2L became optional on the E350/450. When the V10 modular is shutdown, Ford is going to loose sales in the Class C motorhome market unless they can finally figure out how to shoe horn the diesel in there !

Why would it not fit a F250/350 if it is going in the F450/550? They are the same front ends, except the fender flares. Should easily fit in the F150 too. But that desn't mean they will. Let's not forget Ford built a V10 Mustang prototype!

Isn't the 7(?) supposed to cover all applications that were covered by the 6.8? No doubt if the new block does not serve the motor home market, there goes a fair amount of volume I would assume. But as there is a lot of speculation that Ford will be going back to push rods for this motor, does that not solve the width issue?

And for sure no argument on ability to go to 8L-or more. Plenty of vocational trucks in class 8 that need the power but just don't have the annual utilization to justify the diesel premium.

Like I said-"old school " here. Back when Diesel Equipment Superintendent was IMO the leading monthly publication, they would publish monthly sales stats and I think they only started with class 6. I have some old issues in the archives I will check.

No doubt "Medium duty" has a much different meaning today. And as far as the auto press-and even the "business press", they often refer to KTP as where Ford builds "heavy duty trucks"
