Stolen clock returned to train station

Recommended Posts

Im warming up to it. Im actually planning on going down there Friday afternoon for the open house to see it pre-renovation.

I wish I lived remotely close. I love seeing abandoned buildings, and would be cool to see it before they fix it up.

Thats exactly why we are going. Ive wanted to see the inside of that building for years but never had the balls to get a group together and climb the fence.

I would recommend anyone that can go, it is a very cool building. Been in it many times over the years and was sad to watch it fall into disrepair. There was a nice/mean homeless guy that I think saved some of it. He was nice and even give you a tour if you were just looking around taking photos (toss him $20), but he'd yell and go crazy and throw things at the scrappers that would go into it and try to take things.

If you want to learn more about the train station, there's an excellent soft-cover book called "Detroit's Michigan Central Station," written by Kelli B. Kavanaugh and published in 2001 by Arcadia Press that is worth getting. Mostly pictures but with a good narrative. I met the author many years ago at some party we were at. She had a ton of interesting train station stories she gathered as she was doing research, most of which aren't in the book.

I'd love to tour the place this weekend, but I don't know if we can find the time to drive down.

The Clock Story https://finance.yahoo.com/news/clock-stolen-detroit-train-depot-180100688.html is just another piece of the great publicity this is for Ford. As long as the bubble doesn't pop on real estate this could be one of those turning point for the bounce back of Detroit and continued great press for Ford. Heck if nothing else if I owned a home or real estate in that area I'd be buying Ford for this incredible boost emotionally and economically.

While Grand Central Station never was abandoned, I remember the proposals to replace it and the ultimate rehabilitation of it, its hard to imagine NYC without it. Structures like this are irreplaceable. I believe the fact the Ford family has such control over the company was a big factor in this happening and adds to the symbolic value of this move.
