Inflatable Rear Seat Belts -- new option?

Recommended Posts

I'm supposed to be taking delivery of my Black Label extended this weekend, but even so, I've been going through the 'build your own' thing for fun a couple of times a week on the Lincoln website. I know, I could save my configuration, but I find something satisfying about adding all the options over and over. Hey, it kills time while I'm waiting.

Anyway, I wanted to show my little one the car we're getting, so I went through the process again tonight to show them all the options we're getting, color, interior, etc. Tonight a new option popped up: "Inflatable Rear Seat Belts" for $250. Obviously I'm not getting that as the car has already been built, but I haven't seen it mentioned before so I thought I'd throw it out here for anyone thinking about ordering.

Now, I'm wondering how inflatable rear seat belts work if you have them hooked through the back of a car seat. They sound great in theory, but if they are securing a car seat through the back of it, you wouldn't want them blowing apart the plastic or anything. I have no idea how they work, but I know air bags are pretty forceful things when they deploy, which is why little ones aren't allowed to sit in the front seat even in their safety seats.

They use a CO2 charge to deploy. They arent as forceful or hot. Its to make the force of the seat belt be spread across a larger area of the chest.
