Anthony
Fired? Or leaving a possible sinking ship? https://www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a19851684/breaking-johan-de-nysschen-leaves-cadillac-effective-immediately/ In a statement, General Motors indicates that de Nysschen is leaving to pursue other interests."We appreciate Johan’s efforts over the last four years in setting a stronger foundation for Cadillac," said General Motors President Dan Ammann in a statement. "Looking forward, the world is changing rapidly, and, beginning with the launch of the new XT4, it is paramount that we capitalize immediately on the opportunities that arise from this rate of change. This move will further accelerate our efforts in that regard."
J-150
Apparently, you can't become the American Audi in 4 years. I wonder if all of that "experiential" crap goes away next.
mackinaw
He seems to wear out his welcome everywhere he works. Audi, Infiniti and now Cadillac. I wonder if he's through in this industry.
akirby
Translation - Johan didn’t want utilities, he wanted more cars. So we’re going to find someone else who knows what the hell they’re doing.
J-150
Translation - Johan didnt want utilities, he wanted more cars. So were going to find someone else who knows what the hell theyre doing. Hmm, is this partly why he was ejected from Audi and Infiniti?
akirby
Hmm, is this partly why he was ejected from Audi and Infiniti? Could be, although it seems that he has problems with authority in general.
mackinaw
Could be, although it seems that he has problems with authority in general. A few years back, I watched an interview with de Nyychen on Autoline. The guy has an ego the size of Jupiter.
akirby
I'm guessing he didn't have a good answer to these questions: "When will the new Escalade be ready to compete with the new Navigator?" "When will our Aviator competitor be ready?" Also - remember when he wanted to move HQ to New York? They basically told him to sink or swim and that Caddy would be held responsible for its own profitability going forward. I don't think they believed in his vision so they gave him all the rope he needed - and he just reached the end of it.
grbeck
Translation - Johan didn’t want utilities, he wanted more cars. So we’re going to find someone else who knows what the hell they’re doing. I wonder if he continued to prioritize new cars for Cadillac when Lincoln Navigators are selling off the truck, and the new Lincoln Aviator earned rave reviews upon its debut? If so, it's not hard to see why he is now leaving to "pursue other interests."
silvrsvt
I think this says it all:said General Motors President Dan Ammann in a statement. "Looking forward, the world is changing rapidly, and, beginning with the launch of the new XT4, it is paramount that we capitalize immediately on the opportunities that arise from this rate of change. This move will further accelerate our efforts in that regard." AKA Oh shit people are pivoting away from cars and we don't have enough CUVs in the pipeline-guess Caddy will be coming out with its own Traverse/Outlook/etc itself to do battle with the Aviator. twintornados
Geez, does that mean Caddy is scrapping the naming scheme too??
Anthony
Looks like the SUV / CUV craze is exactly what did him in: De Nysschen, in an interview Wednesday with Bloomberg News, said he left amicably and declined to go into details on what prompted his departure.“We agree to disagree and we move on,” de Nysschen told Bloomberg. “There wasn’t a fight. Let’s call it philosophical differences.”The abrupt change, according to two people familiar with the decision, was a result of de Nysschen’s reluctance to accelerate product and operating plans and capitalize on current U.S. market conditions, where industry sales remain healthy. GM executives, the sources said, acknowledge that it takes time to rebuild a brand but there needs to be more commitment to the here and now, rather than the future.

akirby
It's the classic case of building what he wanted rather than what customers want to buy. Starting with ATS/CTS. And I bet they weren't making much profit (if any) because of all the shiny new platforms and falling car sales.
Fgts
Wow, it would take years to see or redirect Caddy from its current course. The 4.2 V8, CT6 refresh, XT5/4 and NY was the right step... BTW, Lincoln couldn't can't catch Caddy, even with misdirection. Yes the Aviatior/Navigatior looks good but can they match the current and upcoming CUVs from Caddy?. GM thinks so - they’re so scared of Navigator they’re offering $10K rebates on Escalades. And they have no answer for Aviator that we’ve seen or heard about. You can’t possibly be defending their lack of product focus. The cars may be technically solid but from a business standpoint they’re not at all successful. If they were Johan would still be in charge.

Aviator is a good step and Caddy need an answer for it but don't kid yourself if you think it will sell in XT5 or probable XT4 numbers.. You cant possibly be defending their lack of product focus. The cars may be technically solid but from a business standpoint theyre not at all successful. If they were Johan would still be in charge. The cars weren't selling like that before JDN got there unless you're talking about the fleet queen XTS. Updated CT6, CT5/ 4 would see how did his legacy do. atomcat68
Joking aside, It can't be a coincidence that this happened right after the Aviator. Even if Lincoln didn't set the sales world on fire, it is three times in a row with Continental, Navigator and now Aviator (Maybe 4 times with Nautilus) . they elicited a positive emotional response from the public where Cadillac is not. Johan prioritized cars over SUVs and now Escalade is behind. They should have seen this coming.

The Continental got a lot of media attention and positive reviews but none of it has produced the necessary end result... sales.
akirby
Aviator is a good step and Caddy need an answer for it but don't kid yourself if you think it will sell in XT5 or probable XT4 numbers.. Is XT5 going to have all the technology and performance that Aviator will have? Can XT5 command a $60K - $80K price tag? It's not volume - it's features and technology and performance at higher price points. Escalade can compete with Navigator but Aviator will stand alone for at least a year or two. Updated CT6, CT5/ 4 would see how did his legacy do. His legacy is he created multiple new sedans on multiple new platforms (some bespoke at the time) and spent a crapload of money to do it, and never got the expected sales to cover all that development cost. All while ignoring utilities and the associated profits that were there for the taking. It's a business issue, not a technical issue. The best vehicle in the world is worthless if you can't make a profit.
